Oxford Dphil History 2025/2026

Hi all, wanted to start a thread as I couldn't find one specifically for this yet. Intrigued to hear and discuss applications for a Dphil? Want to know about Clarendon funding?

I do. I guess. Americanist here with some semblance of hope at a spot. Let's talk.

Hello, also applying for DPhil in history (with an early modern/ 16th century focus). I submitted VERY early and happy to share nerves/excitement

I applied just to see. I don't come from a history background, I'm a military veteran with a security studies/Intel background. I'm actually in a security studies PhD program now, but shifted to an all history dissertation so am looking for a different program. I'm not really nervous since my chances are so low. I'm a modern Scandinavian historian

Sounds like really interesting work, I have a few friends who have done war and defence studies. My fingers are crossed for you.

I’m focused on 5 Tudor secretaries who worked for Thomas Cromwell. You said you’re an americanist, what is yours about?

Looking at environmental history, and specifically hydroelectric dam removal/construction in the 20th century. I have a feeling we probably won't hear anything re: applications for a few weeks yet, what do you reckon?

That sounds really interesting! I don't think so, the email I received after submission said it would be 8-10 weeks from the deadline.

From the website, it seems like we don’t get interviewed for this course. But I’m just wondering if anyone knows anything about this? (I’ve had interviews for all my other applications, so just genuinely curious)

Oxford’s history department does not do interviews for the DPhil or the MSt. They decide graduate admissions on the application and submitted materials.

No but from what I have read they send out invites early February, but I don't know if that is true.
