transferring sixthforms

hey so I’m a year twelve currently doing maths bio and chem at sixth form but im really struggling. I’ve been really indecisive about this whole decision and even still now. So basically id been debating whether to go to a sixth form college where my friends go to, or to stay at my grammar private school sixth form that I had been going to for secondary school. However my best friends have left now and I have one friend there but it still feels lonely and we dont really click. At the start of the year I tried both schools, but even though I hated the grammar sixth form, I still stayed because of multiple factors. They do AQA for chemistry which has lower grade boundaries than OCR, which they do at the sixth form college and then i kept thinking I’m only at the sixth form college for my friends but now I’m rethinking it I was definitely a lot more happier there. I feel like the sixth form is alot like a highschool but just without my friends so it feels really lonely. Also theres people i dont like there too and that Ive had fallouts woth in the past so thats just awkward seeing as my only friend is friends with them too. Also, I feel like I’d work better in a more relaxed setting like a college (i know its a soxth form college but the day to day schedule is quite similar to a college except for the fact they offer a levels) like the sixth form day to day schedule is making me drained as i feel like its too much pressure and just too much to take on. like having to be in form every morning at 8:40 even if i dont have a lesson for a few hours it just drains me and also cos its a place i dont like too. But then I’m thinking I could just make sixth form a place where i lock in and do my work then outside school can be for socialising and stuff? idk but im so miserable there. It’s just so hard for me to make this decision. And also the classes are so much smaller in my sixth form, like 7 ppl. I feel like its not really worth it now cos its abt the work you put in yourself but maybe the help will be worth it when it comes closer to a levels and exams. Anyway I just wanted to ask if it’s too late to transfer to the sixth form college now in November? and I’m also scared about all the catching up I’ll have to do. I do the same exam boards at my sixth form for Biology and Maths, but chemistry is a different exam board. Oh and I forgot to say I also have 100% off all the fees at my private grammar sixth form so yeah thats a big factor. Anyway if anyone has any advice id really appreciate it

I would say unless you are planning to re do the yr 12 then don’t, I mean it’s still early to change but some sixth form/ collages might say it’s too late and you have to try the next year. Friends wise, you can still contact your old friends and make new ones. Changing from one exam board to another might be pretty hard. I had a similar thing going on, I’m supposed to be in yr13 but I had to re do yr 12 simply because I changed collages. I got into a private sixth form in bursary but the they changed the fees a bit and my parents couldn’t afford it, so last yr around late October I wanted to change but my current collage said it had be the yr after. It was honestly sad at the end because at first I was like Yh I don’t mind since I’m a summer baby so age doesn’t matter, I’ll have an extra year to gather more experience and my friends are all at that collage. But by the end of the year I made some really close friends (best fronds even [we are still in contact like everyday ] that I actually felt pretty sad. Either way it depends on how much you and your friends are willing to stay in contact. Another thing to consider is if you already like the exam board and the grades your working at. I did bio, chem, psych and maths and at the end of yr I got A,A,A,A which obviously felt like a bummer because now those mean nothing. Also the collage I go now does 3 subjects max, so originally I dropped maths because I was better at psych and enjoyed it more. However, I changed from psych to maths because psych is Edexcel here and I was used to AQA since I did that and the content for Edexcel is more boring. Now I pretty much had no choice, but if I did I would not have changed sixth form. But you don’t have the same problems. I would say talk to someone and do it quick before you don’t have the chance to change sixth forms. I would also consider is the sixth form your going to actually good, teaching wise and support, because as much as social life is important that is also hugely important. Also I would like to mention, even though I was fine in the vigourous schedule in the private sixth form, the more laid back attitude is a lot more relaxing (I mean to be fair I know all the content really well so to me it’s not as scary). I agree, I mean before I had barely time to relax we were flying through content so fast and teachers assumed we knew everything, on top of all that we were simultaneously doing 2 topics at once, and it was new to me then. Now I like the pace and the support more. It was so exhausting ( I would say private sixth forms are always way more exhausting than normal sixth forms).

So what I’m trying to say is, since money is not important to you, think about the cons in moving would provide, and if your okay with it then the difference in education and extra stuff. Does your private grammar sixth form has better opportunities and education ? Or is it the same? Or is the other sixth form better ( you would be surprised by the fact that my now collage is somehow so much better than a PRIVATE sixth form in terms of education AND opportunities)? I would also consider, if the schedule and environment is effecting your grades (by extension mental health) , because at the end of the day the grades (by extension mental health) are important and lastly it would genuinely help you more by meeting your friends again and if your struggling making new friends, (also I would like to say I joined that private school AT sixth form and made friends with the other new sixth from students, which might be different for you because you’re there since high school, so consider that) and then talk to someone about. And final advise for sure is whatever you do DO IT FAST, before your chance goes away.

Hope this all helps, and good luck.

hey thanks for taking the time to reply your advice has reallt helped. i just wanted to ask how come u had to redo year twelve if you got all A’s ? wouldn’t it just make sense for them to let u go on to year thirteen. basically my other option is a sixth form college its not a sixth form so it will be quite different. I feel like the main difference is just the class sizes - its much smaller at my current sixth form whereas theres so much more people in each class in the other soxth form college i might transfer to. with the friends aspect, I will still see them because the sixth form i go to and the sixth form college is like a ten minute walk away so ill see them like three times a week. but idk i just find it so miserable and depressing there idk if im being irrational but i also dont know if its worth all the cons. And also id only consider moving if they said i dont have to redo year twelve otherwise id just stay at my current sixth form even tho i hate it so much. Like i feel like it actually is affecting my motivation i cba even doing homework and revision and stuff and i already am behind in some of my subjects. The main problem for me with moving would be the catching up, cos I would have missed six weeks or even more than that.
