Am I likely to be able to get at least a 2:1?

I'm a final year law student and my entire degree is based off final exams which I'll sit at the end of the year. The collection I got back was 62 (59,64,66,60) and my tutorial essays have been 62, 59 (:frown:), 65 and 64. My exams are closed book and all my collections/essays have been open book/online. Am I likely to be able to get at least a 2:1 in my overall degree. I study for 7 hours a day 6 days a week, so I suppose I could be doing more but probably not much more. I've made my peace with not getting a first but if I get a 2:2 I will be distraught lol. Am I likely to be able to get at least a 2:1 or should I start preparing for disappointment now? I'm expecting my exams to be marked harsher than collections/essays and I'm worried that might push me down into the 2:2 bracket.

Do you regret choosing Oxford? Would you not prefer 4 exams in Year 1? 5 exams in Year 2 and 5 optional choices exams in Year 3? Or wish you had applied to Cambridge? 😛 lol

Hey @Username123ab,

Your current scores aren't too far off a 2:1; it ultimately depends on how your award is calculated and how your final exams are weighted. How much is each exam worth? Are you stronger in some modules than others (i.e. can you rely on one to partially compensate a weaker score in another)?

It may be worthwhile reaching out to any academic support services available at your university or asking your lecturers/professors for clarification on any content you're struggling with during their office hours. Alternatively, ask your coursemates for tips or arrange a group study session to figure out areas for improvement together.

Best of luck,
Eve (Kingston Rep).

Someone has already said this but reach out to lecturers etc to pin point how you can improve if current feedback isn’t enough. Also I’ve been victim of this but one less desirable grade would make me spiral. But what’s done is done, all you can do is focus on getting the next assignments or exams right.

Hi there,

It depends really how your final mark is calculated and how it is weighted. My best advice would be to try as had as you possibly can and then you know you have done everything you can.

I thought I'd give you a couple of tips which have helped me in my work and may help you too:

Try and start as early as possible so that you can for any assignments so that you can have plenty of time to refine your work and keep going over it to make it as good as it can possibly get. This also give you lots of time to ask your tutors for help and they can guide you on what to write.

With exams, finding the best revision method that works for you is important. Try and have a look at different ones and maybe try a new one for one of your exams in case this is so more helpful.

Try and make a schedule so that you can see exactly when you are able to get your work done and when you have free time to ensure that you get all of it done. I find this helps me to be more productive and also find that the work I do is better quality too.

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador 🙂
