Chemistry is probably the hardest A-Level, Biology less so.
For Medicine though, you have a good combination in Biology/Chemistry/Maths.

They’re definitely harder at A levels but you will have also learnt and improved a lot by then, you’ll be fine don’t worry.
I hear a lot of people who find chem harder than bio, but at my school it’s the other way round by far, quite weird.

Not taking chemistry will definitely limit your med school options but there are still enough that are fine with just biology, however I’d recommend taking at least one of the two.
Maths opens up a lot of options but it’s less important than chem or bio I’d say, so psychology would be ok too.

If you’re unsure then maybe you can take 4 subjects at A level and see if you’d like to drop one, that’s what I did.
Definitely consider whether med schools will accept whatever options you choose, but also remember to consider what you will enjoy

Cambridge want Maths, Chemistry and Biology. Where as Oxford want 9s and 8s in 9 subjects at least in GCSEs but only want Biology and Chemistry and any third subject.

Hi,

I’d recommend checking the entry requirements of the medical schools you’re interested in, as these can vary.

Generally, a combination of Biology and Chemistry with a third subject (not General Studies) works well, so either Maths or Psychology would be fine.

Personally, I’d suggest choosing something you’ll enjoy and do well in, to achieve high grades.

I found A-level Biology and Chemistry more enjoyable than at GCSE, as they go into more depth. If you’d like any revision tips, I’d be happy to share.

Hope this helps,

I have found that for both bio and chem, obviously the content difficulty increases but if you are passionate about it then you will be able to do well (I’m in year 13 doing bio chem maths and Latin feel free to ask me specifics)

It really depends on what you major in if it's chemistry you need maths but if it's biology then either one would work

No Med course requires more than 3 A levels - remember, AAA will always look better than ABBB, and that could cost you a Uni place. 2026 entry requirements for each UK Medical School : UK medical school entry requirements - Medical Schools Council

Or, look at the entry requirements for med-related degree subjects :
Undergraduate | School of Cellular and Molecular Medicine | University of Bristol (scroll down for courses)
Biosciences | Biology, Medicine and Health | University of Manchester
School of Allied Health Professions, Pharmacy, Nursing and Midwifery | Allied Health Professions, Pharmacy, Nursing and Midwifery | The University of Sheffield
etc

if u dm me asking, why?

It depends on you though, I was going to do psychology but I thought it would be too overwhelming with the content because I’m doing biology and chemistry, so I ended up picking maths.

yea maths is fine, if your getting like 8 or 9 in gcse you should be fine, because everyone starts at square 0 and learns new stuff so maths is fine and i ndo bio, chem, maths and have applied to med schools and i feel like after chem and bio i need a less demanding subject for my head which i find maths to be as i don't have to remember so much stuff for it and maths is just about practicing questions which i find fine and there is lots of help online form videos to worksheets so all around i think its a good subject

Most people take maths cause it gives you an advantage in the mathematical aspects of chem, but you can do it without!! Id recommend taking all four and dropping down to 3 once you realize which you prefer

I like it. Statistics is long but mechanics and pure are manageable. All I do is practice a bit and try to wrap my head around the concept during class so I can maximise chemistry and biology revision.
