Second year uni housing allowing pets?

I'm at first year uni student in Bournemouth currently looking at second year housing. One of the people I am looking with has an emotional support cat. Will this be easy to find a house with or may we encounter problems?

You will find that all 'University' accommodation will not allow animals, and that private rentals that allow this will be thin on the ground and much more expensive, especially if you want access to a garden. The fact that is a supposedly 'emotional support' animal won't make any difference to that.

This depends on a lot of factors but the biggest by far is the Landlord themselves.
I remember in my final year of uni, one of the tenants asked if they could have some fancy rats in the house as a pair, it came under two conditions despite the overarching consensus being a no pets policy.

1.

They are to remain in the bedroom of the tenant at all times (truth be told, they were allowed out as all of us were happy with them in the house).

2.

Everyone in the house was happy to have them and there wasn't a single objection (no one objected).

Primarily it is based around hygiene and cleanliness (as well as potential damage to the property) but it is primarily down to the landlord and if they say yes, all tenants will have to agree to it to, meaning I think it would be easier to find a two bed flat or house (or however many rooms you need) so you don't have anyone blocking you from moving in with pets.

Have they got their emotional support cat with them currently?? If not then I would wonder why they need to bring it for second year as it’s really going to limit you …many (non students) people with pets really struggle to find private rentals in my city but I don’t know how competitive housing is in Bournemouth so worth just ringing up the letting agencies in your area and ask.

We're a 4 that are trying to find a house together and everyone is completely fine with the cat

Yes she does. She currently lives in a studio in university accommodation but the numbers of those for next year are very limited so will be hard for her to find again
It's difficult but possible. Expect to have very few options to choose from. I lived in a student private rental with a cat during my placement year - i did a lot of asking around on student acom facebook groups for suggestions and advice and was contacted by a group that needed an extra person and were moving into somewhere they knew was pet friendly. If your uni has a veterinary course, try asking around them... the previous tenants of the house i lived in were all Vet students

Some advice here from the ESA registry, too: https://esaregistry.co.uk/do-landlords-have-to-accept-emotional-support-animals-uk/
