Advice about second year placement

Hi
I am currently on my year two placement at mid point. I am on a ward where they obviously hate students and I feel very much the odd one out. I have a PA who never speaks to me or shows any interest in teaching me. I just get through the shifts assisting CSWs with observations and skin bundles.
My mid point is due and thankfully I get to go on spoke for a month but my PA is very unapproachable and uninterested and I need advice how to get my epad done. I ask at beginning of shift and she passive aggressively rolls her eyes and says ok. Upto now I got PS to do initial interview and proficiencies but need her to do this. It is now affecting my mental health and I hate every shift. I do not know how to navigate it. Any advice be appreciated.

I would suggest that you speak to your university course leader and placement officers regarding this matter asap.

You should first try and speak to your ward manager about it and if no success then immediate speak to your university course leader and placement officers because there behaviour is not acceptable........ What the staff forget about is they were students nurses themselves at one point in their life.

Your main issue is going to be getting your placement signed off when you finish it if you having issues with staff now because it's your own responsibility for making sure your placement is signed off by your placement supervisor or ward sister/ manager.

@Emily_B can you offer any more advice on this.

Hi,

As mentioned above, I’d recommend speaking to the ward manager first regarding this. If things don’t improve, raise your concerns with your university placement leads, who are there to support you and can intervene if needed. For your mental health, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the wellbeing support team or your personal tutor.

Wishing you all the best,

Registered nurse & (very) regular practice assessre/supervisor (mentor) to students here.

You need to get in touch with the practice education facilitator who supports your placement area NOW - they may go by a different job title but definitely exist for every single placement area across England/Wales/Scotland/Isle of Man/Channel Islands.

Hi there,
As someone studying midwifery and in there 3rd year, I can understand how disheartening this is, especially seeing as you are trying you best to learn and progress. First off you have done to right thing by recognising how it's affecting your well being and reaching out for advice. I would also advise you to document your experiences with the PA when they arise when she is refusing to ensure a healthy learning environment. Therefore if you would need to communicate with a wider team you have evidence to support your claims. And please use your university's wellbeing and support services as this is affecting you mentally.
