GEM as a biomed student who did BTEC

Hey, I did BTEC applied science, I got into biomedical science and I like it. I guess before uni I didn't want to bound myself with picking medicine as I wasn't sure. Many medicine courses want a levels. Just for context I did foundation in maths and science and got a 4 in maths and 5-5 in science as I did foundation.

I'm keen on doing medicine afterwards now as time has passed, but the thing is, I'm not sure what my options are with what I've got. To be honest, I don't know where to start. I don't want to do a placement year in my course as it'll take longer to start GEM plus I've seen people who have done Biomed without a placement year get into med. I need help ASAP. What, do I start with? How do I overshadow GPs? I have no idea. Help please :/

Hi there,

You’re in a good place already, Biomedical Science is one of the most common routes into Graduate Entry Medicine, so you’ve got a strong foundation.

First, don’t worry about your BTEC or GCSE grades. Medical schools mainly look at your degree classification, admissions test, and work experience. If you finish your Biomed degree with at least a 2:1 and show very good motivation for medicine, many GEM schools won’t mind how you got there.

Right now, focus on keeping your grades high and getting clinical exposure. You don’t need to do a placement year to get in, so if you’d rather finish sooner, that’s fine. Instead, build experience gradually alongside your studies.

Best,

The requirements that you’ll need vary from university to university. So it is important for you to pick out which ones you’d like to go to first. Normally for the GEM programs you would need for you to attain at least a 2:1 or first class honours in your current degree. Exams might also be a requirement like the UCAT exam or the GAMSAT exam. The University of Sunderland doesn’t have a graduate-entry program, but they do offer a standard five-year MBChB course and consider applicants who already hold a degree

Get relevant work in Uni vacations - anything in the NHS, anything in care-homes or special schools etc.
