Hey @Fallen2211,

There's a couple of good threads/blogs on the site if you're looking for packing advice:

My TSR: What to take to university checklist
What to take to uni
What do i actually need to bring to First year?
How much stuff should I bring to uni

The packing list you read should cover most of what you need to bring to uni. Make sure to check what your accommodation already has in terms of kitchen appliances - e.g. some might already have kettles and toasters as standard, others might not. 🙂

Hope this helps,

Hi,

I’d recommend checking your accommodation to see what’s already included, as most places will have basics like a microwave, toaster, and kettle.

A few things to remember:
•Laundry bag or basket makes trips to the laundry room easier.
•Hangers to hang clothes in your wardrobe, easy to forget!
•First aid kit and basic medicines plasters, paracetamol, etc.
•Kitchen essentials good knife, frying pan, saucepan, chopping board, tin opener, tupperware for leftovers, and a microwave cover. Plates, bowls, cutlery, and mugs you don’t need a full family set, just enough for yourself and maybe a spare or two.
•Cleaning products washing-up liquid, sponges, wipes, spray, bin bags, cloths, gloves, and air freshener.
•Bedding duvet, pillows, sheets, and extra blankets for winter.
•Photos or decorations helps make your room feel more homely.

You may also want to bring some basic stationery for your university bag and consider a laptop or iPad. If you do forget anything, you can always pick it up locally, so think about what you specifically want to bring from home when packing.

Hope this helps,

Hi!

Have you had a look on your university’s social media pages? Quite often they’ll post advice on packing and similar issues in more depth on Instagram and/or TikTok from current students who have been in the same position as you.

Hi @Fallen2211 👋

Some things to pack that many people forget tend to be clothes hangers, extension lead if you have a lot of electrical devices, bedding, laundry bag or basket and a medical kit as well! Kitchen things can be knife, cutlery and pots and pans. These are just a few pieces many people tend to forget to pack 😊

Hi @Fallen2211,

It's great that you are curious about what to bring and are looking on here for advice. There are many things that can be forgotten about or missed. Something that I would suggest is looking at getting a sturdy washing basket for the trips to the laundrette. I also brought a clothes airer which made doing washing cheaper. I would then dry my washing within my room or in the hallway of my accommodation. I got a tiered airer which took up less space in my room.

Something I always recommend is bringing something from home or that reminds you of home. This made the adjustment to university a bit easier. Something else that can be forgotten or missed is a first aid kit and some pain killers. Which are great to have just in case!

Lastly, I would suggest some extension leads too and depending on storage and size of accommodation, bringing in some storage boxes.

You can find a more detailed list on our page here.

Hope this helps,
^Zac

Hi @Fallen2211 ,

This is a great idea! I know you have got some great responses to this already, but I thought it was worth also responding so you can see which things lots of people like!

Kitchen things:

A few tea towels as they will get dirty easily

Coloured utensils and plates so they don't get mixed up with everyone elses

Baking trays

Tupperware so you can save leftovers

Check before you bring things like air fryers as you may not be allowed them - although they are very helpful!

Bedroom:

Two duvet sets so you can wash one and put the other straight on

An airer to save on drying

Storage for under your bed if it fits as you might not have lots of storage space

Hangers

Extension leads

A lamp

Homely things like photos, posters etc

Bathroom:

Two towels again so you can use it while one is drying

A bath mat

Shower caddy

Shoes for the shower if its a shared shower

I hope some of this helps!

Hi @Fallen2211

Some of the things that I bought that are not usually mentioned are:

Shoes to wear around your flat such as crocs or slippers.

A pack of cards is a great way to bond with your flatmates when you start uni.

Waterbottle - great for saving money by taking it out with you and also handy to have in your room as you are less likely to spill the water.

Batteries for if you have anything that needs them.

A mini toolkit might come in handy, especially if you are buying any small storage units!

Hope that helps!

Hi there,

There are some great suggestions in the thread, I just wanted to emphasise on bringing some bedding, pillows and my personal lifehack - a small portable kettle. I love drinking tea, but I just don't want to go to the shared kitchen every time I want to make some tea. A mini kettle is a life saver for me.

Hey @Fallen2211,

Packing was definitely one of the most exciting parts of the lead up to uni for me! I feel like the lists summarise the essentials pretty well, but some things which I recommend:

Doorstop (more social and makes meeting housemates easier)

Extension leads there's never have enough plug sockets.

Scissors (surprisingly so many people forget).

Nail kit (clippers and a file etc).

Power bank (just so handy for long days, nights out, festivals etc).

Laundry bag (not just a basket) makes it easier to carry clothes to/from the laundry room. IKEA bags are ideal for this.

Disinfectant wipes. Convenient all-in-one.

Extra hangers you’ll definitely need more than you expect.

Hotwater bottle (hits hard in the winter).

Pins for photos.

Notebook + a few pens (you’d be shocked how often people forget).

Reusable shopping bags (saves you having to buy some)

Medicine basics (paracetamol, plasters, cold/flu tablets)

You probably will find that you won't bring everything you need after settling in, but you can always ask to borrow a flatmates. You can also nip to a nearby shop (like B&M) to get anything you forgot with new uni friends/flatmates for a bonding experience.

Hope this helps and good luck with packing!

Cara (2nd year Marketing student)
