University Finances - How Worried Should I Be?

I've received an offer to study Economics at the University of Nottingham. I really liked the uni when I visited, and their Economics course is pretty well rated. The only thing that's bothering me is their financial situation. I've seen that they've been running lots of deficits (like a lot of unis to be honest), and they've just suspended a few courses like languages, theology, etc. How concerned should I be about this and potential staff cuts? Given Economics is probably one of their stronger courses, will my education probably be mostly unaffected? And is Nottingham just acting more than other unis and this is an issue for any I choose to go to?

Hi, can I ask what did you get for your GCSES and what your predicted grades are if you don't mind sharing, as I am also looking to apply to this course but I am a bit worried if it is too competitive?

I got three 9s and seven 8s at GCSE and am predicted A*A*A* at A Level. I'm also contextual with extenuating circumstances (though I'm not sure that makes much of a difference). Good luck with your application - hopefully I'll see you at Nottingham!

Hello @Misc04!

It’s completely understandable to have questions about this. A small number of courses will be suspended for 2026/27 entry while a proposal to close them permanently is considered. This is not unusual, we constantly review the courses and modules we offer in light of student demand and other factors.

There are no planned changes to Economics as part of this review and the financial challenges you may have seen reported are something the whole sector continues to manage.

If you have any specific questions about your Economics offer or want to talk things through in more detail, feel free to contact our Admissions team directly we’re delighted to help.

All the best,
Student Rep Abián #UoN
