Week In The Life of a Student Studying MSc UX Design

Monday
I luckily! don’t have any classes on a Monday, so I get a little bit of a lie-in before my day begins. I’m currently working on a huge group project in my Digital Studio Practice (DSP) module which involves finding ways to implement AR technology into cultural spaces. I join a Teams meeting for that at 11am to find out our group’s general progress. After that, I conduct some user interviews for the project on Teams, uploading the audio recordings and transcripts to my group’s OneDrive. It’s a day of mostly online work - and although it’s not too physically strenuous, I am glad to get a break from my screen on Tuesday!

Tuesday
Today I have a three-hour lecture for my DSP module at Kingston’s Penrhyn Road campus,so I get there a little bit early to discuss plans for the week ahead with my group and grab a bite to eat (a donut and an Americano!) from the Fairground Café at Town House. Although the lesson is a bit long, it’s always super interesting and it’s proven a huge help in terms of figuring out what exactly we need to do next in the group project. After it’s over, I head home and meal prep for tomorrow.

Wednesday
Wednesday is my ‘full-on’ day: I have a two-hour lecture at the Kingston Hill campus from 10-12, followed by a three-hour computer lab at Roehampton Vale from 2-5. The meal prep from yesterday is always much appreciated, as it means I have a packed lunch in-between classes and don’t have to spend too much money on food; this week, I’ve prepped fried rice for my lunch.

As a MSc student, I study two modules in my first-term and two in my second, so Wednesday focuses on my Beyond Optimising Interactions (BOI) module. I particularly love the lab sessions, as they give us a place to test out and experiment with whatever we’ve learnt in lectures that morning, whether it be conducting heuristic analyses of apps or calculating the SUS scores of different websites.

Thursday
I have a three-hour Teams lecture from 2-5pm for my DSP module this week, it’s on gamification and how it can be implemented into our group projects. Admittedly, I’m not the best at paying attention in online lectures, but the regular breaks throughout do help and the content this week is particularly relevant to what my group is considering doing for our overall project so I try my best.

Friday
After four days of work, I take a little bit of a break on Fridays after all, who wouldn’t want a long weekend if they could have one? Nonetheless, I do spend two hours working on an upcoming assignment for my BOI module; I’m making good progress and should hopefully have it finished by the end of next week (ahead of schedule)!

How does my week compare to yours? Let me know down below! 😊

Eve (Kingston Rep).
