Which uni for law?

hi, im currently in year 13 wanting to be a solicitor and applying for law, deciding which university to put as my 5 choices.

I think ill be predicted an AAB or ABB and so far ive chosen York, Exeter, Nottingham and uea, in hopes of getting a contextual offer as I would be the 1st person in my family to go uni and I live in a area considered poor along with low progression to university.

can anyone please help me out on what sort of uni i should add as a 5th option and are the unis ive chosen realistic?

Hi,

While I’m not a law student myself, you may want to consider LLB (Hons) Law at LJMU as a backup option. The entry requirements are BBB, and it’s 3 years full-time or 4 years with a placement year if you want some extra experience.

LJMU Law allows you see law in action early on. From your very first year, you can observe solicitor/client interviews, and there are opportunities to get involved in pro-bono work through the Legal Advice Centre. If you take the Level 6 module, you could even spend a year helping clients at Support Through Court Liverpool, which is excellent experience if you’re thinking about practice later.

Students also take part in mooting and client interviewing competitions, and the campus has mock courtrooms so you can practise in realistic settings, which helps build practical skills and confidence. The course is professionally accredited, setting you on track for either barrister or solicitor training.

Liverpool itself is a really affordable, diverse, and student-friendly city with many activities. The Student Union is active with societies and events for all interests, so there are plenty of opportunities to get involved. All first-year students are also guaranteed accommodation if you choose to live out.

If you can, I’d recommend attending an open day to see if our campus feels right for you http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/study/undergraduate-students/undergraduate-open-days

For more information about the course https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduates/2026/30578-law-llb-hons

Good luck with your applications

The usual advice for your 5 UCAS choices is 1 choice just above your predicted grades, 3 at your predicted grades and 1 below. This gives you the best chance of offers and makes sure you have an obvious Insurance choice.

Check on each Uni website that you meet their criteria for a Contextual offer - each Uni may use different criteria, and you need to be certain of this before you apply so you can make the right 'grade' choices.

Hi @jennifer2t77,

Great predictions! Wishing you the best in you exams. For our Law degree, you need 104-112 UCAS points at A2 which is equivalent to BBC. Here's a bit more about our Law course:

We have strong links with legal firms such as Brabners, Forbes, Harrison Drury, Napthens Solicitors and many more.

Our judge marshalling scheme allows you to shadow a judge at Preston Combined Courts. You’ll also present cases, take part in trials and learn about professional conduct in court in our state-of-the-art moot court room.

You’ll have the opportunity to apply to study abroad for one year at our partner institutions in Cyprus and Mauritius, or at another university across the world.

You can find more information like modules, the facilities and hear from past students here.

Lastly, we do also have great student support here including financial and wellbeing support to name a couple. Find out more here. You could also get a flavour of our law course and more via @unilancashire_justice on Instagram.

Hope this helps and best wishes,
^Zac

Why not consider a 2-year LLB instead. You receive all the teaching and content of a 3 year degree in just 2 years because we add an extra term in the summer. In fact, you could add LLM and complete both in 3 years. To find out more about this and our extensive work experience options, go to Law School | University of Buckingham
Hope this helps

Hi there,

Warwick could be a great fifth option for you as the Law course here is really well-regarded. The typical offer is A*AA, but if you're eligible for a contextual offer (you can check the criteria on our website), it drops to AAB, which is right within the range you’re expecting. Warwick also doesn’t require the LNAT, so that’s one less thing to worry about in your application.

A quick overview of the course: Warwick’s Law degrees help you build a strong understanding of the technical and doctrinal aspects of law while also encouraging you to think critically about the role law plays in society today. Teaching is shaped by the Law School’s research strength, and you’ll find lots of modules that take contextual, international and comparative approaches. Alongside studying cases, statutes and treaties, you’ll explore how law is influenced by economic, cultural and political change, and how it affects real life beyond the courtroom.

Your current choices seem realistic with contextual offers in mind, and adding Warwick could give you another strong, achievable option.

Best wishes,

you could consider warwick? they offered me a contextual offer of AAB, but they do also place quite a bit of emphasis on gcses, so thats something to bear in mind.

Hi @jennifer2t77,

Exeter is a really strong choice for law it’s got an excellent reputation and consistently ranks highly in the UK for law. The LLB course is really well-structured: you start with the foundations in your first year, then move into more specialised areas like criminal law, contract law, and human rights. One of the best things is how much emphasis there is on practical skills you’ll do moots, client interviews, and lots of activities that actually prepare you for becoming a solicitor.

The university also offers lots of support for first-gen students and those from areas with low progression to uni. There are mentoring schemes, networking events, and support from both tutors and fellow students, so it’s a really welcoming environment.

Student life in Exeter is fantastic too. The campus is beautiful and the city itself is compact but lively, with loads of societies, sports clubs, and student events. Plus, being in the Southwest, it’s really close to the coast if you enjoy weekends at the beach!

With your predicted AAB/ABB and your contextual background, Exeter could be really realistic for a contextual offer. If you make sure your personal statement highlights your motivation for law, your background, and why you want to be a solicitor, you’d definitely stand out.

Honestly, it’s a really solid choice academically and socially you’d probably thrive here!

Hope this helps 🙂

Hi there,

Your choices look very good for AAB/ABB, especially with contextual factors on your side. York, Exeter and Nottingham are competitive but definitely realistic for you. And UEA is a really good fit to keep on your list because we’re known for generous contextual offers, strong student support and a law school that’s genuinely well regarded for teaching quality and outcomes. A lot of first-gen students say they feel properly supported there, which makes a huge difference on a course like law.

Have you visited the campus yet?

Best of luck,
Daniel
Hi,
With AAB/ABB predictions and strong contextual factors, the universities you’ve chosen (York, Exeter, Nottingham, UEA) are realistic choices. All four regularly give contextual offers, and your background (first gen + low-progression area) will definitely be taken into account.

For your 5th option, it’s sensible to include at least one choice with lower entry requirements or greater flexibility on contextual admissions, just to keep your list balanced.
The University of Law (ULaw) is a good fit for that final choice because:

We make contextual offers and look at your full background, not just grades.

Our standard LLB offer is usually around BBB, with contextual flexibility depending on your profile.

We have multiple campuses, smaller class sizes, and a strong focus on getting students into the legal profession (lots of careers support + pro bono). You can apply to a campus with in a city more suitable to your needs.

Ulaw can give you a solid, career-focused safety option without compromising on quality.

Best of luck with exams,
Ulaw,
Alfred.

Please please make sure you get over-predicted if ABB is your minimum. You will be made offers of ABB or AAB at even better unis. Switch one or two to be even more aspirational. Maybe Durham or UCL? (Although I’m not too sure if UCL reduces grades). Also, unis take into account widening participation by quite a bit.
