Student Experience and Flexible Degree Structure at UofG

Hi, I’m Anoosha, and I’ve just finished the MSc Earth Futures program here at the University of Glasgow (UofG). I also completed my undergraduate degree here in Geography. I’ve really enjoyed my time at UofG and found immense value in learning from passionate and enthusiastic staff, going on field study trips like those to Mallorca and Glencoe, and engaging with our vibrant campus life.
When applying for my undergraduate degree, I applied to Glasgow, Edinburgh, St Andrews, Leeds, and Queen Mary University of London- all for Geography/Sustainable Development degrees. I received offers from all universities but ultimately chose Glasgow. One reason was that I appreciated that the course was four years long and offered a flexible degree structure. In my first and second years, I studied additional subjects alongside Geography, with the opportunity to switch to one of those subjects in my third and fourth years or graduate with a Joint Degree if I wanted to. This flexibility relieved a lot of the pressure of choosing a subject, knowing I could explore other interests too. Find out more about the flexible degree structure here: www.gla.ac.uk/undergraduate/choosingyourdegree/understandingthedegreestructure/ https://youtube.com/shorts/Ty_Ptw9ID94
I hope you’re surviving application season- it can be a stressful time! A piece of advice I’d give about the process is not to focus too much on league tables. Sure, they provide some insight into the prestige of courses and institutions, but they don’t tell you anything about how you’ll experience them. Choose a somewhere that excites you, and that you can’t wait to explore. See more of what our campus has to offer here: https://youtu.be/pEPLWygiRJk?si=sI1JkDVOQ-8PCuQU
I hope this was helpful! Feel free to ask me any questions about the UofG or my experience below.

Hi Anoosha,

I'm a parent whose daughter is applying for various Geography degrees at the moment. I had suggested Glasgow for the BSc course, but my daughter said she didn't meet the additional requirements of AA (in Scottish Highers) in two science subjects. She filled in the UoG enquiry form to confirm what that meant, but we haven't heard back yet. She has Maths and Geography at A, but no other science. Is Geography considered a science in this context? (She didn't do Higher English, so can't go the MA route).
