Academic misconduct

On 10th October, I received an email from my university (BCU) regarding concerns about my dissertation. Following this, I had a meeting with my supervisor on 13th October to discuss the matter and provide clarification. Later, on 24th October, I received another email asking me to submit evidence to support my dissertation work. I have already provided all the drafts and relevant documents that show my progress throughout the dissertation process.

After submitting the evidence, I contacted the university for an update and was informed that my case is currently being reviewed by the Student Governance Team. Since then, I haven’t received any further communication, and the uncertainty has been causing me a lot of stress and anxiety.

If anyone has gone through a similar process at BCU or has experience dealing with the Student Governance Team, I would really appreciate your guidance or advice on what usually happens next, how long the review process might take, and how to cope during this waiting period.

@BCU Student Rep ?

Hi there,

This sounds like a really tough situation and I'm sorry to hear you've had to go through it.

From hearing others' stories on here of communications like this it sounds like the key, although frustrating and stressful, is just to wait it out. The time to review a case varies from uni to uni and also on the time of year and severity/amount of evidence they have to review, however these things are taken seriously and so someone will be bound to communicate with you soon.

If you have not done anything wrong and been honest all the way through then I'm confident that you will be fine. For now, I would suggest to try and park it for a bit - focus on your other modules/things you have going on, go for walks, do a bit of Christmas shopping, talk to your peers about it if you want to, and try speaking to your personal tutor about how you're feeling.

I hope this helps - keep strong and please try not to be anxious because this situation will not last 🙂

Hey @Normain , I hope you are doing well and thank you for this as I feel it will help others experiencing the same things. And situations like these can be incredibly stressful, especially when your academic integrity or progress feels uncertain. It is completely normal to feel anxious during the waiting period but you have already gone about it the right way: meeting your supervisor, providing full evidence of your work, and following up appropriately.

Though I do not have a personal experience, here is what I know typically happens and how I suggest you should look after yourself in the meantime:

1.

What happens next:

The Student Governance Team will review your case based on the evidence you provided. This includes checking your drafts, communication records and Turnitin reports and may also involve further consultation with your supervisor or module leader. Once they have reached a conclusion, you should be contacted via email either to confirm the matter is resolved or invite you to a formal meeting if they need further information.

1.

Duration:

The process varies depending on how busy the team is and the complexity of the case. It is not unusual for it to take a few weeks after you submit your evidence. If it has been more than three weeks since you last heard back, it is absolutely okay to email politely asking for an update on your case status just for reassurance. But you will most definitely eventually hear back from them.

1.

Coping with the waiting period:

Remind yourself of the truth, which is how you have been transparent and cooperative which is exactly what the university looks for in these reviews.

Try to separate your self-worth from the situation, it is only procedural not personal and it does not define your academic integrity.

Keep busy with manageable routines. Focus on things that bring calmness.

Reach out for support, BCU's Mental Health and Wellbeing team or even Students Union advice can offer emotional and practical support while you wait.

I really do wish you all the best and feel free to ask any more questions you may have 🙂
