Hello. I am a student who is currently doing my year 12 as level and I have chosen medicine as my future career. I have a question about the various courses within medicine in the university. How do I know what program I have to choose (e.g. BM4 or BM5) when applying to the uni? Also, are there any differences in content learned between the various programs? If so, what are they?

Will my IGCSE grades be looked at when I apply?
Are there any scholarships provided for certain conditions fulfilled?

Hi, it's great to hear you are thinking of applying to Southampton!
You can find out more about the different medicine courses here. As you seem to be doing your A-levels currently, you would be applying to BM5, as BM4 is for graduates (people who have already completed a degree and wish to then do medicine).

You can find out more about what content you will learn, how the course will be structured, and any entry requirements here, just click on the relevant tab to what you want to find out more about! The entry requirements section will tell you about IGCSE requirements, A level requirements, and other requirements (e.g. the UCAT).

To find out more about scholarships and fees, see the page here. You will also be able to find more information on the knowledge base.

I hope this can help, please let me know if you have any more questions!

Hi there, I’m in year 12 currently and I was planning to come to the open day in October but I couldn’t make it so my first question is when are the next open days?. Also, I study as level biology, Chemistry, maths and business studies I was wondering how are the courses like for biomedical engineering and business management or marketing if offered in Southampton as I’m not sure which courses I’d choose in terms of options and in terms of bsc or msc or meng? As I am thinking about applying but I wanted to see which course I’d actually want to apply for between the 2.
Thank you
Hope to hear from you soon 🙂

Hi @aknasa20,

I am sorry to hear that you couldn't make it to our October Open day. Our Next open day will be in summer 2026 till October 2026. I would highly recommend you click this link :https://www.southampton.ac.uk/open-days/undergraduate? , in here you can register your interest for 2026 open days and book them when it comes out. You can also register to gain access to our recorded virtual open day, which will have talks from biomedical engineering , business management and marketing professors and most likely current students as we offer these courses. In terms of deciding what course to choose, I would suggest you look at the module different courses offer and definitely attend an open day in 2026, so you can chat with professors and current students. For Bio med we have Meng, however for business management and Marketing we offer Bsc, but you can add year abroad or placement year if you like. I hope this was helpful. Please feel free to reach out again if you have more questions.

Best Regards,
Student Ambassador.

Hello. I'm a student in Year 11, and I will be doing my GCSEs this year. I'm planning do study Aeronautics and Astronautics at Southampton, as I really like the program. Are there any entrance tests like Oxford University has? I'm an Italian student, are there any grants/scholarships provided for International students? Also, I want to enhance my application, so are there any supercurricular activities you'd suggest I do?

Thanks!

Hello, and thank you for your message. It’s great to hear that you’re interested in studying Aeronautics and Astronautics at the University of Southampton. It’s brilliant that you are already planning ahead in Year 11.

To answer your question about admissions, there are no entrance tests required for this course like the MAT or PAT used at Oxford. Southampton bases decisions mainly on your academic grades (or international qualification equivalent), your personal statement, and your overall application.

There are scholarships available for international students, and Italian students are welcome to apply. The specific scholarships change each year, so it’s best to check the University of Southampton website when you are closer to applying to see which ones are available.

To strengthen your application, supercurricular activities are a great way to show your interest in aerospace engineering. You might consider online engineering courses or any activities related to aerospace run from your school. You will also be in a competitive position if you take Mathematics and Physics for Alevel. Just to get your prepared for university.

Most importantly, choose activities that genuinely interest you. Universities love to see real passion and curiosity for the subject. Do not worry too much, you still got time.

Best of luck with your GCSEs, and feel free to ask if you have any more questions!

Best wishes
