Finding Your Place at CCCU Clubs, Societies, and Small Wins

Starting university is a fresh chapter with new faces, new habits, and a whole new environment to adjust to. At Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU), one of the best ways to feel at home is by getting involved, trying new things, and celebrating the small wins along the way.

Whether you’re naturally outgoing or someone who takes time to warm up, there’s a place for you here, and you don’t have to find it all in the first week.

One of the best ways to make CCCU feel like home is by diving into CCSU’s clubs, societies, and the little wins along the way. These are the things that will help you feel a part of something.

Dive into CCSU’s Groups: Your Gateway to Community
Did you know CCSU has a huge variety of societies, sports teams, and interest groups you can join? Their Groups page lists tons of options across many categories: academic, cultural, hobbies, faith, media, politics, and more.
Some examples you’ll find:
* African Caribbean Society (ACS) celebrating diversity and organising events to bring culture to campus
*Social Music Society for music lovers, creators, jam sessions,
*Open-mic nights and listening events Production Society for theatre, film, stagecraft,
*Tech behind the scenes PGRA (Postgraduate Research Association) for postgrad students doing research, to network and share resources
* All kinds of sports clubs from football, hockey, netball, Snowsports, and climbing to more niche ones. Also, when you’re unsure what suits you best, scroll through the groups page there’s likely something that resonates.

Small Wins: What They Look Like & Why They Matter
It’s tempting to think “I’ll feel settled when I’ve made loads of friends” or “once I’m doing great academically, I’ll feel like I belong.” But the truth is, your sense of belonging is built from smaller, quieter victories.

You can give it a try by attending a social meeting even though you feel shy. You can say Hi to someone in your lecture and have a short chat, which is the first step of Networking. You can also offer some help with an event, such as an open day or even in a small way. You can also go to our sports centre to do some exercise and socialise with more students to work out together. If you like to groove on music and feel light-hearted or put the stress away, you can also music open mic with Social Music Society and watch someone else perform. Everything adds up. Over time, those small steps become friendships, confidence, and the feeling of “this is where I’m meant to be.

Tips to Make the Most of Societies & Small Wins
Browse the CCSU Groups page early. See what’s there. Maybe pin a few societies of interest and attend their first meetups.
Don’t pressure yourself to join everything at once. Try one or two clubs first. You can drop or add more later.
Attend “Give It a Go” events These are specifically for students testing out societies without pressure.
Volunteer for small roles. Even handing out flyers or helping set up an event gives you access to the community and shows you’re invested.
Talk to committee members. If you're curious, ask people running the societies what they do, how much time it takes, etc.
Set mini goals. For example: “Attend one meeting this week,” or “talk to one person after the event.” Celebrate when you meet them.

You don’t have to find “your people” overnight. At CCCU, with Canterbury Christ Church University Student Union groups and the small steps you take, over time, you’ll find your community, your space, and your rhythm. So scroll through the CCSU Groups page or click on a few societies that spark you and take that first step. That small win is your beginning.
