Uni A level requirements

If you want to take a course but only have one of maybe two required A levels is that an automatic rejection? For example applying to a course that requires both A level physics and maths but you only have done A level maths. Can this be negotiated with the university or are course requirements extremely strict?

Hi @kh4dij4_5

I hope you are well! If a course is specifically asking that you have certain A Levels then it is likely that you will need both of them in order to apply for the course. However, I understand what you are saying by if you have only done one of the A Levels then can it be negotiated. My best advice would be to contact the uni directly. If you get in touch with the admissions office then they will definitely be able to make it clear for you exactly what you need in order to be able to apply for the course!

The uni will let you know if you need both of the A Levels they are asking for or if there is another way you can go about it in order to be able to study the course. What course is it that you are interested in applying for? I hope you manage to get an answer soon and good luck!

Let me know if you have any other questions, I am more than happy to help!

Thanks, Matt 🙂

If there are two essential subjects then you'll need both. Otherwise they would just specifically ask for either, ("Subject X or Subject Y"), or make it clear that one of them was a preferred subject. They wouldn't make people run around the houses of contacting them to negotiate.

Fortunately, fewer degrees have two essential subjects - it tends to be the remit of science or engineering type programmes, IE. either two sciences or Maths and some other relevant subject.

Applying without the specified A level subjects is one of the quickest way to get an immediate rejection.

Which degree subject are you aiming at - and what are your A level subjects / predicted grades?

Hi, I've done some looking and thankfully I do meet the subject and grade requirements surprisingly A level physics is not required by many engineering courses. The thing is I was previously going into healthcare so my whole application work experinece, extra curriculars and personal statement that I have prepared are for healthcare, I'm not sure how to go about my application now.

Thank you for the reply 😊. I did some looking Physics A levels is not a strict requirement in every uni so I do still have some options where I meet both subject and grade requirements. As for courses I am interested in MechE or CivilE. I would appreciate some advice on how to strengthen my application especially because my extra curriculars, work experinece and personal statement where all based on going into a healthcare course (Mpharm) so I'm not sure where to start with this.

Thank you for your reply 😊. I did some more looking and a lot of the courses I'm interested in do not require A level physics as you said so that's a relief.
