Deferred entry

I'm applying to my 5 choices this year, but starting in 2027 so that I can take a gap year. Does anyone know anything about when to apply for accommodation/student finance (Wales) if you do this? All of the information online is targeted at those who are trying to defer their place post-application. I hope I have explained that correctly. Any suggestions of what to do on a gap year from those who are on/took one would be great to!

I did this, you always apply the march before you start. So the student finance application will also be in 2027

As above, you won't be able to apply for student finance until around March 2027. Different unis have different procedures for applying for accommodation so you would need to check with them once you have a confirmed place.

Hi @YourLocalNerd

I hope you are well! I also did a gap year before going to university and I applied for my student finance and accommodation in around March/April time of the same year that I was going to start uni (2027 in your case). It was a simple process for both and was easily accessible online, in fact I was in Australia on my gap year and was able to sort it out with no issues!

Gap years are an amazing opportunity to take a little bit of time out away from studies and do whatever you please for a year! Whether that is just working to save money, travelling, or even gaining some experience volunteering/working somewhere related to what you want to do at university. I worked for a few months on my gap year and then went travelling to Thailand and Australia for 3 months. It was the best experience of my life and I am so glad I did it. I would definitely recommend you to go and explore on your gap year, it doesn't have to be as far as Thailand or Australia, even somewhere in Europe would be a fantastic experience!

Gap years also set you up perfectly for university I believe. It allows you time to figure out what you want to do and builds your confidence up! Uni can be a daunting thing however you gap year will teach you lots of valuable skills that will definitely benefit you!

I hope this response has helped, let me know if you have any other questions, I am more than happy to help!

Thanks, Matt 🙂

Thank you so much for your response, it's very helpful. I think I'm probably going to do something similar, gaining some work experience before travelling for a little while. Do you have any advice on how to include your gap year plans in your personal statement? I'm applying for English and Film, and I'm not too sure how to link my plans to my subjects. I'm not convinced that 'eight consecutive years of exams is too much' is really what an admissions team is looking for haha. Thanks again

you won't need to do anything until around march/April 2027 before you start your course. applying for student finance is done for that academic year so you don't need to apply two years early or anything.

hope this helps,
