Should I do A-level Chemistry Privately?

For context, I’m currently in y12, my a-levels are biology , philosophy , and psychology. I am interested in taking a gap year after y13 , then going into university , or/and be able to do an exchange internationally. My aim is to pursue a career in Medicine !

If you’ve seen my other posts , I’ve always expressed exploring my other back-up options in relations to humanities , such as law , psychology etc. but none of those caught my interest. All of the stem however have e.g neuroscience , pharmacology etc.

I’ve noticed all of these share the same requirement for the top Russell group uni’s (or at-least the ones I’m aiming for here in the uk). That thing is Chemistry a-level.

I know for Medicine , not all medical school’s require chemistry and biology, but majority do. This therefore narrows my choices of all medical schools I can apply for.

I’ve tried switching my Philosophy option to Chemistry back in mid-September, but wasn’t able to because Chemistry was too full. Ever since I’ve been researching other ways to get into Medicine, and there are two ways which caught my eye: doing a degree, then applying for Graduate Entry Medicine, or to try take Chemistry privately. I honestly don’t know which one to take.

I’m leaning more onto the second option , and that is because doing two degrees will leave me in masses more debt than if I was to try do it privately. But even if I do try to take it privately , that’s expensive for me , too.

I was thinking of talking to the Head of Chemistry on whether it’ll be okay for me to have access to the Chemistry’s online teams , or if I can sit in one lesson per-week to look study from it.

I’m stuck on what to do, and I want to make a decision fast because if I dk take the private route , I want to start planning on how to go about it now. Should I go with the first or the second ? If second , how would I do if ? How would I self-study ? Do you have any advice for it (for those that may self-study it already). Help me !!

I would go for it if medicine is ur dream. It would make u a more unique applicant as it shows drive as well. Plus, far more likely to get into the standard 5 year course than the 4 year Graduate entry medicine GEM course. Please do not pursue GEM if medicine is what u want to do with ur life ur odds shrink dramatically the admission test scores and grades needed for GEM are crazy. If u r not 100% set on medicine than don’t commit to a strenuous course like medicine u will be miserable lol. Feel free to ask more questions

I’ve always been 100% on Medicine , and I guess that’s making me more motivated to do this, but for when that motivation does drop, how do I tackle against procrastination ? Do you have any advice on how to actually approach doing so ? How would I actually register to do it in y13 with the rest of those that do Chemistry (or November of my gap year after y13 as I’m pretty sure they do a-level retakes then I could be wrong)? Do you know if the costs are expensive ?

Can you switch to a different sixth form?

No unfortunately, I don’t see the point nor would I know where to go. I like the sixth form I’m currently in, and I do not feel like restarting.

Ok uve got several options: sit a level chemistry (just exams and practicals with no lesson time to reduce costs)at a private test centre in tandem with ur other three a levels, (2) do a level chemistry at an accelerated pace during a gap yr after u complete ur three a levels again at a test centre (maybe even at ur sixth form), apply for a foundation year into medicine (this option has eligibility criteria tho)

Im really tired so i might have missed an option

The main issue im seeing is getting a chemistry teacher to write u a strong reference to med schools vouching for your abilities and predicting u a high enough grade so that u have a chance of getting in. This may not be possible if a chemistry teacher doesnt know you very well

Hello

My first question for you is: are you sure medicine is your goal, or could it be that you're more drawn to STEM in general?

I am sure you find the eligibilty criteria with a quick google search...

Yes, that’s what I was thinking. My parents don’t mind paying for me to sit at a private centre either at the end of y13/in my gap year.

Medicine has always been my goal, but I have found (especially doing a-level philosophy) that STEM is an interest, however I do not see myself doing a STEM-like job other then Medicine. I’m still trying to explore if there’s anything else I’ll be interested in, but nothing catches my eye. If it does, it’s not as much as medicine.

Okay, so medicine is the goal. I just wanted to confirm that, because our usual advice to a user is, if they are thinking of doing medicine or something else, to do something else.

Russell Group is nothing but a marketing term. When it comes to applying for medicine, since it is so competitive, you need to be strategic about your options. More information on the following thread:

Your issue is that you don't have A-Level Chemistry. A-Level psychology might be your saviour in this situation. Bear in mind the following link is updated for 2025 entry. Things may change when you apply.
https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=5611422

The biggest issue with you doing A-Level Chemistry privately is that you haven't factored in how you'll achieve the practical endorsement qualification, which is expensive and not a simple route. You'll also still have 3 other A-Levels to study for. It is imperative that you get the best grades possible, otherwise any offers you receive you will most likely lose if you miss the grade requirements.

Do not do graduate entry medicine, unless it is a last resort. It's much more competitive, time-consuming and expensive.

Yes I’ve figured that’d be a problem. I’m planing on talking to the Head of Chemistry about that, and my Head of Sixth Form to see if there’s a chance for me to drop Philosophy by the end of Y12, and then switch to Chemistry and do Y14. Or if I could also take part whenever they’re doing their practicals, so she can assess me, or something similar. So that’s what I’m planning on trying to do for now. But I’ll defo look into the links you’ve given !
