Postgrad Studies SHU or BCU

So I applied to BCU during my last year of my undergrad in Criminology and sociology and have gotten a place originally in Sept 2025 but i have a deferred a year as i wanted to save more money to be able to afford moving to Birmingham for my course as postgrads get different SFE which includes maintenance loan and tuition loan. The course i applied to study is PGCE in social sciences (Sociology) however im hesitating about moving to Birmingham next sept. I keep seeing on the news bad things happening in birmigham and how high rent is. I had also applied to sheffield hallam uni but was not able to attend my interview - therefore i did not get an offer, and im starting to question if i should cancel my place at BCU and reapply to SHU. Some of the positives are is that rent is really affordable in Sheffield - i have looked it up + and maybe its safer than birmingham. Also my course is pgce in secondary but i want to teach in a sixth form - debating if i will be okay doing my placement in a secondary school in Birmingham. Or maybe i should do a post 16 pgce instead?? As i want to teach in a sixth form but maybe the experience i'd get in secondary pgce in sociology is more valuable?? Also I'm hesitant to cancel my place because of going through the whole application + interview process again and getting my references again.

Hiya @anonymous #1

First, congrats on your offer for your postgrad course!!

Just to reassure you, Birmingham is a very popular student city, so there are lots of student-friendly areas here, like Harborne, Selly Oak, and Edgbaston. Rent can vary depending on where you live, but house shares can make this more affordable.

You could always visit Birmingham before making the decision, see if you can see yourself living here, and what student life might be like.

In terms of the course and teaching routes, I wouldn’t want to give you the wrong info, so it might be best to contact the enquiries team at +44 (0)121 331 6295 or contact the Education and Social Work Admissions team directly. They’ll be able to explain exactly what teaching levels the PGCE (Social Sciences) qualifies you for and what kind of placements you can expect.

It's completely normal to feel unsure, you just need to make sure you're choosing the uni that is right for you, you have already done the hard part by getting the offer!

Best of luck with your decision, and let me know if there's anything else I can help with

BCU is a better uni. Don't go to SHU.
