Can I use a maintenance loan to pay for a private flat?

I currently live in a council flat and I'm filling out my UCAS application. I have my own white goods, furniture and everything in the flat is mine. I don't really want to live in student halls because I'd have to sell all of my things/put it in storage and it would be expensive. Would a maintenance loan cover a flat where I could bring all of my furniture or would that be too expensive?

That would depend on the size of your loan, the cost of the flat, transport of your goods etc...

Hi,

You can use your maintenance loan for a private flat, but it really depends on your situation e.g how much student loan you get, what your rent and bills are, and other living costs. Private flats can be more expensive than student halls as bills aren’t included, so it’s a good idea to work out a budget first to make sure it’ll cover everything. Halls aren’t mandatory, so if staying in your own place with your furniture works better for you, that’s totally fine.

Hope this helps,

You're certainly allowed to.

Finding somewhere affordable near a uni and a landlord that accepts students is a different matter though.

Hello,

You definitely can, maintenance loans are your own means and can be spent anywhere. Although the pricing probably depends on the accommodation. Sometimes private student halls are cheaper and you can also look into flat properties on Rightmove.

Your maintenance loan can go toward rent, but it rarely covers a whole private flat unless you’re on a higher rate or in a cheaper spot. If furniture’s the worry, you don’t need to sell it all; short-term storage can tide you over, and Henfield Storage was decent when I tried it. Just crunch the numbers and pick whatever keeps things calm in first year.
