Hi,

It’s great to hear you’re thinking of applying to Southampton for Geography!

One of my favourite things about the course is how flexible it is. In first year, BA and BSc students take the same modules, so you get a solid introduction to both human and physical geography and can easily switch between the two if you’re unsure at first.

I also love the freedom to choose optional modules outside the School of Geography. If you enjoy a particular area, like physical geography, you can continue exploring it, or you can branch out completely. I took a module in the Department of Social Statistics and Demography, but you can even pick up a language or try something totally new.

Southampton really lets you tailor your degree to your interests, and the support here is fantastic. You’re assigned a Personal Academic Tutor (PAT), who’s great for guidance on academics and settling in. The careers service is also brilliant! They run workshops and one-to-one sessions on CVs, interviews, and more, plus they offer opportunities like volunteering, internships, and Student Innovation Projects - all amazing opportunities to enhance your CV.

Hope this helps, and good luck with your application and exams!

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

Hi,
I’m interested in studying geography at Southampton!
I am most interested in asking about student life. Is it really fun or more quiet and is there a lot to do or do you find yourself going further affield. Also is it more of a city based or campus uni?

Many thanks

Hi @learning321
Great to hear you’re thinking of choosing Southampton for Geography!

Student life here is really varied there’s a good mix of quieter, chilled things and fun, social stuff. For me, societies have been the biggest part of uni life. I’m in Geography Society and Rowing club, and I’d 100% recommend joining at least one in first year. Everyone’s going to be trying new things so it’s worth joining in on this too! It’s a great way to make friends, and it really helps balance uni stress.

If you’re into nightlife, Southampton’s actually pretty good. Sports nights are my main thing (rowing often does a pub crawls ending at Jesters), but there are loads of student nights like £1 doubles at Sobar on Tuesdays, Glam at Trilogy on Thursdays, and Fishies at Circuit on Wednesdays. There are also plenty of nice pubs the Mitre in Portswood is a favourite.

If you prefer something quieter, there’s still loads to do. The Common is a huge park near campus and perfect for picnics in summer. West Quay is the main shopping centre and has the usual things like bowling, cinema, pottery painting, and bars.

I’ve mostly stayed in Southampton for activities the only time I’d really recommend going further is for Christmas markets, especially in Winchester.

In terms of campus, it’s mainly based around Highfield where Geography is taught. There are other campuses such as Avenue, Boldrewood and Nocs. But for Geography it’s basically all at Highfield - I had the occasional one at Avenue in first year which is only a 15 min walk from Highfield.

Hope this helps and feel free to ask anything else!
