Music at uni

Hi guys I’m trying to study music at degree level, but I’m so stuck on which unis to pick! I’m so indecisive but I’ve decided on 3 so far, now I just need 2 more and I have 4 options. Does anyone know anything about the music courses at Newcastle, York, Southampton and Sheffield, or anything bout these unis in general that will make me prefer it? I’m looking for a more performance based course with some composition and other music industries such as marketing or film, but less compulsory music history/theory. I’m also looking for a big city with great nightlife and student union, but also affordable and a bit of greenery too! Please and thank you to any responses, if you have any recommendations for other units I should look at that you think would suit me, please say!

Hello @anonymous.67,

That’s great to hear you are considering studying music at Southampton!

I currently study psychology at Southampton and have loved it. The campus is very green and has parks nearby too. The nightlife in Southampton is great - we have clubs and pubs which are a 20 minute walk or 5-10 minute bus journey away from campus in an area called Portswood. There are also lots of clubs in the city centre. Southampton is relatively affordable and the students union are so helpful with money, advice, safety and wellbeing. They also put on lots of events and societies, which you can find out more about on the website.

Unfortunately I can’t give my first hand experience about studying music as I do psychology. But you can find out more about it on the website or visit one of our open days!

Hope this helped and let me know if you have any more questions

Hi there!

I hope your doing well🙂 I know that Poppy has responded to you regarding the city life in Southampton (thanks Poppy!), but I myself studied Music as my undergraduate degree so hopefully can help you out a bit!

I could not recommend Music at Southampton enough! I had such an amazing time here over the 3 years and was able to experience so much within my time. You are able to tailor your course to what you would like - there are many performance and composition modules that you will be able to take. With performance, you can perform in a lot of local venues surrounding southampton, such as Turner Sims, The Brook, Heartbreakers, The Hobbit, and many more. There are options as well once you get to 3rd year where you can take a performance and composition dissertation, which will take up half of your modules for the year! In addition, there are fun modules (not all history / theory based) that you can take such as how the arts work, music education and social justice, musical theatre and opera, to name just a few.

To reiterate Poppy's point the social life here is very good as well, with lots of cheap offers available to students!

Hope this helps!

Hey anonymous.67, 👋

It's great to hear you have chosen Sheffield as one of your options for studying music at university! I know someone who did their degree in English and Music and they loved the department, support and opportunities. 😄

You can get 18hours os instrument tuition in your first year, whether or not you choose to take performance modules. You can also get practical industry experience in the 'Work in Music' module, and build a network of professionals who can advise you on your career.

There are a range of optional modules that meet your criteria such as composition, performance, as well as sound and moving image, and music analysis. At Sheffield, you also have the option of choosing some of your optional modules in other course subjects. The English course has various modules on film, so these could be a good option for you if you wanted to write about music in film. 🎬️

The thing that made me choose Sheffield was that it is a big city and then still feels quite safe and community-based. The night life is great, and the Student's Union is literally awarding (UK's number 1 SU for 7 years in a row!). It has cafes, restaurants, lunch places, a bar, a nightclub, shops, bakery, bubble tea, and also runs over 370 student societies! If you want to explore the vast variety of societies, you can do so here. They also run GiveItAGo sessions throughout the year so you can trial societies to see if they work for you! ⚽️🧶🎶💃

Sheffield is of course also known for its greenery, the Botanical Gardens is a personal favourite! And we are also right next door to the peak distruct so you can hop on a train or a bus and explore the Ladybower Resevoir, Bamford Edge, or Bakewell (the bakewell tarts are worth the bus trip!). 🌲🫓

If you have anymore questions about Uni of Sheffield, please let me know and I'd be more than happy to help!

All best wishes,
Phoebe

Hi, have a look at a joint degree between the RNCM and Manchester university. You can the best of both the academic study and performance.
