The Student Room Group

low attendance ..

im scared about my attendance lately. I’m a first-year student and I have commute every day. Arriving for a 9 am lecture means I have to wake up at 5am, and lately I’ve found it hard to keep the schedule and its pretty exhausting. i have other things also going on and because of this, my attendance has dropped quite a bit and I’m worried about the implications. i also wouldn't really want to tell them this reason though.

so im wondering if they are able to kick you out, or take you off a specific module without a warning?
Not without warning, but if you miss monitoring points they may contact you and eventually there could be a meeting with your tutor. The final outcome is that you could be removed from the course, but that’s a way off.

Are the circumstances likely to get any better? If not, you would be better disclosing them now. I’ve seen countless students only raise mitigating circumstances only after they’ve failed modules or been told to repeat a year.

If you’re able to catch up with classes and stuff then you should be alright, if they ask you about your attendance, then you can explain - I’m sure they’re understanding. Have you considered accommodation ?

My parents are strongly against me moving out. I have also have a weekend job for over two years where I live, so it would be very complicated. They are also not happy with me applying for SAAS, which means I wouldn’t have the money to pay for living expenses

I understand the moving out part, however, is there any specific reason for not allowing SAAS funding? Since tuition fees are quite expensive and it would be better for SAAS to cover your funding. On a side note, have you considered doing lesser hours on the weekends, it will surely help free up time for academic studying.

My mum especially had to keep paying off her student loan, and really doesn’t want me to do the same. She gets angry if I even mention it. She will not allow me to work fewer hours as that would be seen as lazy because she did the exact same when she was a student but the burnout is already happening and it’s not even Semester 2 yet.
