reconsidering my course/Uni

I'm currently on my gap year with a place at a uni on a product design engineering course and I've realised that i don't like the course I'm on and I am overall neutral to my uni of choice. at the moment im considering changing my course with in the uni or trying to re apply to other unis and courses. but i have a few caveats in that i got pretty bad grades in a-levels and im on an unconditional offer from my uni. advice, please give me advice/ suggestions.

why not resit your a levels and reapply this year for other unis? if you dont get any offers back then just go to your original uni imo

though if you havent started yet how do you know you dont like it? you should go to an open day and check the facilities, ask questions etc then make a more informed choice

Hey there, it’s completely normal to reach this point during a gap year and realise the course you chose doesn’t feel right anymore. A lot of students discover that once they’ve had some space to think, their interests shift or become clearer. The good thing is that you still have options, even with an unconditional offer in hand. If you’re thinking about changing direction, LSBU has a really good range of courses that could suit different interests depending on what you feel drawn to now. Since product design engineering didn’t quite click, you might want to look at areas that still use creativity and problem solving but in different ways.

If you enjoy the technical and practical side of things, LSBU has strong engineering programmes that focus on real industry skills. Mechanical engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, and civil engineering all offer hands on learning, workshops, labs, and projects that link directly to real world practice. These courses are great if you still like designing, building, and understanding how things work, but want a clearer focus than product design.

If you’ve discovered that you prefer the more creative or user focused side, our product design course might be something to look into, as it leans more towards innovation, prototyping, materials, and the creative development of products. It balances technical understanding with imagination and practical design tasks.

You might even find that fields like architecture, digital design, game design, or computing feel closer to where your interests have shifted. LSBU courses in these areas are very project based, with lots of opportunity to build a portfolio and try different skills before deciding what direction you want to grow into.

You’re always welcome to explore LSBU further. You can book a campus tour https://www.lsbu.ac.uk/study/study-at-lsbu/open-days/campus-tours to get a proper feel for our spaces, and you can chat with our current students on Unibuddy https://www.lsbu.ac.uk/student-life/chat to get an insight into the courses you’re curious about.

Hi there,

I think if you're definitely set on changing courses, that you should first try and swap to a course within the university that you have your unconditional offer from. If you meet the entry requirements for the course you want to change too, it shouldn't be too much of a problem!

If you wanted to apply to different uni's, then I believe you would have to withdraw your offer for this uni before submitting any new applications, so I'd definitely think about that first before making your final decision.

Hope this helps! Good luck
