Change uni - tuition fee

Hi everyone,

I studied a undergraduate course with an integrated foundation year. I completed the foundation year and then started Year 1, but I left after about 3 months.

Now I’ve transferred to the different uni to study a very similar 3 year course. SFE already funded my foundation year and part of Year 1 at my previous uni.

Does this mean I’ll have to pay for the first year of my new course myself, or can I still get full funding for all 3 years? Has anyone had a similar situation or managed to get their first year covered?

Thanks in advance! 🙏

Hi there. When you start a new course we use this calculation Length of current course + 1 year - number of years of previous study.

This means you new course calculation would be 3+1-2= 2 years of Tuition Fee funding left. We apply the years to the 2nd and 3rd year of the new course. This means the Tuition Fee Loan for your first year would be blocked.

Do you have any extenuating circumstances as to why you have to leave the previous course? Thanks, Leah.

Hi Leah, thank you for your message.
I had to leave my previous course because the environment at the university was extremely demotivating and mentally draining for me. I found it very difficult to concentrate in classes, I completely lost motivation to learn, and the overall atmosphere felt depressing rather than supportive.

I hoped that Year 1 would be better, but the teaching quality was still at a very low level it felt more like an easy high school rather than a university course. My anxiety was getting worse every week and my partner noticed how much it was affecting my mental health, and we both realised that the environment at that university was having a negative impact on me.

I genuinely want to complete my degree, and I’m really enjoying studying at my new university the difference is huge. I just became very anxious again when I found out that my first year might not be funded.

Hi there,

To apply for Compelling Personal Reasons you would need to upload us a cover letter from yourself explaining why you could not continue with your studies and when it took place. On the cover letter you will need to include your full name, customer reference number and sign & date the letter. We would also need evidence from a 3rd party and this can be from your GP or University on their headed paper. It must confirm why you could not continue with your studies and when it took place. This letter should also be signed and dated. Once received it is taking approximately 23 working days to process.

Thanks, Drew
