@nooone another thing you could do is speak to your teachers after class and ask if you could have a chat about your grades and how to improve them. You can go over your past papers and see what it is you mainly struggle with as this will give you advice that's tailored to you. It's better to work on the specific stuff you struggle with from this tailored advice as that is how you will see the biggest improvements the fastest.

Hope this helps ))

Hi @nooone,

Past paper questions are the way to go; time your responses and then work through the mark scheme, making sure to note down any key discussion points you might have missed. For any poetry component on your course, print out a blank copy of a poem you've previously studied and try to annotate it from memory.

Make sure to read the feedback given on any essays marked by your teacher. Are you stuck at your current grade because you're running out of time, struggling to find discussion points or not providing in-depth analysis? Once you find out the specific reasons you're not moving up a grade, you'll be able to tackle them much more directly. Talk to your teacher if you don't understand the feedback given.

Hope this helps and best of luck with your revision!

Hiya!! I’m a year 13 predicted an A* so will give my advice. (I do the Paris Anthology, Poetry, Othello, The lovely bones and the great gatsby). I for sure found the Paris anthology the hardest as it felt very strange at first, however i reccomend going back over all the texts and making a quick note of the codes of production and reception, the texts purpose, context, generic conventions as these score alot of the marks and can work for analysis too and brining the texts together, if you don’t fancy remembering them all if you get comfortable with identifying them eg knowing that history texts are mainly to inform and then to entertain as a secondary purpose you can usually do this within the exam too. For this I would also reccomend looking at the english language specific language levels like Grice’s Maxims, Gendered language and things found in speech like fillers and utterances as knowing these gives you an edge and comes up in most texts with spoken elements. For poetry remember all you need to know is language levels and analysis which you can find great resources for online (im happy to send mine) so i would pick out 4 ish quotes from each with an ‘a- level’ language level like temporal deixis or anaphora and attach some analysis to this which can garuantee you a good mark in both aos. As an extra note on this, don’t worry about comparing poems much as you would have at GCSE. They are not looking for comparison and they do not award marks for it. In the lovley bones i have found they often ask quite obscure questions/themes so get comfortable with thinking outside the box, since they also award niche points of analysis or interpretation which you can come up with as essay plans. Essay plans are also what I would reccomend most for this question, alongside picking out a few key scenes that can be used for multiple questions. Also, remember you get marks for understanding the conventions of the text such as the fact it’s a magical realism / fantasy/ bildungsroman novel, the context of the book and the fact the narration is homodiegetic so don’t forget to add this to fulfil that ao. I would also make essay plans for Othello and learning key moments however the questions are more straight forward. They also award higher bands to more niche points in this next so keep in mind. I would also learn the key points in the Shakespearean structure of the plan ( the ones i use most are the ‘hamartia’ point of iago igniting Othello’s jealousy, the moment of final suspense of Desdemonas death). For the great gatsby as it is creative writing i would not borther with quotes. What i did instead was made a note of every character (including small ones as they come up lots !!) and how they speak, what they do, how they act etc so if im recasting from thier perspective it allows me to be more accurate to the text and then talk about this in the commentary. I would also pick out key language levels in each chapater or across the whole text you can then use in the recast. Context is also important for the commentary. Sorry this is so long i hope it’s helpful!!

Thank you very much for putting all this together. I'll definitely make good use of this. Yeah, I agree Paris Anthology is a tough one-there are so many different texts. Your tips make it feel a lot less overwhelming.

How about past papers?
It also might be worth speaking to your teachers to see what they recommend.
