Is it that you don't have any GCSEs, or that you messed up both Maths and English?
Are you now taking A levels etc?

Hi there,
It’s great that you’re thinking about getting back into education, and you’re definitely not alone in worrying about not having GCSE Maths and English yet. The good news is that you still have several clear routes into university, especially at London South Bank University (LSBU). While most LSBU undergraduate courses require a minimum of Grade 4/C in GCSE English and Maths, the university also accepts equivalent Level 2 qualifications, such as Functional Skills Level 2 in Maths and English. So, if you complete either GCSEs or Functional Skills before the degree starts, LSBU will still consider your application.

Alongside that, LSBU requires Level 3 qualifications (A-levels, BTECs, Access to HE, or equivalent) that add up to around 112 UCAS points, depending on the course. This means that once you meet the Level 2 English and Maths requirement, your Level 3 qualifications become the main part of your application. If you don’t currently meet the GCSE or Functional Skills requirement, LSBU offers many supportive pathways through LSBU College, where you can study a foundation year or preparatory programme that helps you develop your academic skills and progress straight into a full degree.

If you’re drawn to Law, LSBU’s LLB (Hons) Law is a fantastic option once you’ve achieved your Level 2 English and Maths. The course is based in central London, right near the legal district, offering students practical experience through LSBU’s law clinic, workshops, and opportunities to connect with professionals. The location gives you access to real-world legal environments, which is a huge advantage for building confidence and experience.

If you’re unsure which route to take, the best next step is to join our LSBU Open Day on Saturday 15th November.

👉 You can sign up here: LSBU Open Day.
👉 You can also chat with our students through our Unibuddy platform: Chat with our students.

You’ll be able to speak directly with admissions staff, ask about GCSE vs. Functional Skills, explore foundation-year options, and find the most suitable path into university. You absolutely still have options, and LSBU offers the support and flexibility to help you get there.

You will need a Level 3 qualification in a relevant subject for entry to Uni - if you are over 19, then Access to HE is a one-year course and available at most local colleges. More info - Access to Higher Education

Why don't you have any GCSEs - did you complete you schooling in another country?

Hi! To get back into education, you’ll usually need to resit your GCSEs in Maths and English if you haven’t achieved the required grades. Many colleges and some universities, like Liverpool, will accept you once you have at least a 4 or 5. Your best bet is to contact local colleges or adult learning centres about enrolling for resits. Once you have the grades, you can then apply to universities.
