A level in first language

Hi guys, I am currently in year 12 and studying French, English Language, Geography and Psychology. I am a native french speaker as I am bilingual (both my parents are french). Some university policies are unclear as to wether this is an accepted A-level?? Does anyone have any advice as I would ideally like to drop psychology but am unsure if a UK or France-based university would accept only three a-levels if one of these included french. I am planning on taking a geography BSc or BA (or potentially broadcast journalism) and these are some unis I like; Exeter, Leeds, Leicester, Bristol, Lancaster
Hello @evaellelc15,

That’s great to hear you are thinking about university! It depends on which course you’d like to take and which universities you are thinking about applying to. Let me know and I can try and help!

You could also try and contact admissions for your chosen universities to find out.

Hope this helped

you can call up/ email the admissions team if you have any questions regarding this, it’s better to hear straight from them if it’s unclear online

Most Unis do not have a problem with this - the last time I looked it was just LSE who were bothered about it. The majority of Unis take the view that since they accept 'Irish' and 'Welsh' A levels from Irish and Welsh speakers, that being tricky about A levels in French, Arabic, Mandarin or whatever, is actually a bit racist and/or simply unfair. Make a quick phone call to each of your Unis if you are worried about this, but honestly, its not going to be a problem.

Hiya Poppy thanks for the reply,

I think contacting admissions is a very good idea- do you know if I could get a quick reply or if this will take a long time?

Thankyou

Phone them if you want a quick reply - an email reply will always take much longer.

Heyy @evaellelc15!

That’s awesome to hear you’re considering Lancaster University for Geography or potentially Journalism!

I’m pretty sure Lancaster does accept French as an A-level, even if you’re a native speaker, but it’s always best to get confirmation directly from admissions.

You can email them at [email protected], and they usually reply within 3 working days. If you don’t hear back, give them a call, they’re really helpful and should be able to clarify everything for you.

All information to do with admissions can be found through this link: https://portal.lancaster.ac.uk/ask/contact/more/contact-admissions/

By the way, I’d highly recommend signing up for our Unibuddy platform, it lets you chat directly with current students about the courses you’re interested in, like Geography or Journalism, and they can often answer more specific questions about the course and student experience. Link can be found here: https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/study/chat/

Hopefully this helps! Any questions do feel free to ask~
