I do have moments where I wonder if I should have done A level maths instead of Geography. I got a solid 8 at GCSE. But my brother did A level maths and hated it and had a really bad teacher and just found it so hard and barely scraped a C. He was really good at maths at GCSE. Apparently it is a big jump. I need to get AAA so it put me off. Though Geography is my least favourite GCSE so might not get that anyway. Also I am not a fast learner and was worried the pace would be too fast for me. I was really lucky at GCSE and the teacher went over things very thoroughly, which suited me. Other people thought she was too slow.

To put it in context, I think most of his maths A level class got a C or below. And my brother was getting U's until he asked for help from another maths teacher in the school and sat in on extra lessons taught by that teacher. Only a few got B or above and they were the maths geniusus and basically taught themselves.

Hey @xx.s4ha,

When I was at sixth form, there were quite a few students who ended up dropping A-Level Maths after a few months. As far as I'm aware, whether or not they regretted it depended largely on what university courses they ultimately ended up applying to. Some went on to apply for engineering/science-based courses, where not having Maths significantly limited their university options - others went in the complete opposite direction and pursued art/humanities, where Maths wasn't necessary.

A-Level Maths is a difficult A-Level - as mentioned above, even very mathematically capable students can struggle with the content. If you genuinely don't think Maths is necessary for your future plans and you're struggling to bring your grade up, it makes sense to drop the subject. If you want to go into a STEM field, it might be wise to give it another few months to see if you can improve your grade.

Hope this helps,
Eve (Kingston Rep).
