I'm choosing the January round so that my application doesn't drown in the sea of standard applicant rounds, hehe. What did you apply to study?

Hey! I applied in the October round for History 😊I read that the Cambridge Trust scholarships are only open to October applicants, so I didn’t want to miss out but the January round honestly seems like such a smart strategy! I can totally see why you chose it.What are you applying for?

Hi! Oh wow! Your a brainbox studying History. I hope you are successful - fingers crossed for you.

I'm looking to apply for Geography, I was invited for the residential but couldn't go, but the admissions tutor was really nice and I promised him I would not forget Cambridge.

Have you done A-Levels or access to higher education?

Aww thank you, that’s really kind 😊 And Geography sounds brilliant I’ve heard such good things about the course at Cambridge! That’s lovely that the admissions tutor encouraged you like that.
I've just finished an Access to HE Diploma in Social Sciences. It’s been quite full-on but I’ve really enjoyed it, and it’s been a nice route back into education. How about you are you doing A-levels?
Also, have you got a college in mind yet? All three mature colleges seem great, but Hughes Hall has definitely caught my eye although Wolfson looks really friendly too!

No problems! 😊

How did you find the access course and what kind of topics did you study? Social sciences sound quite deep - they are well respected by Cambridge. I'm doing 3 A-Levels and it is quite strenuous but also engaging for me. My local college didn't offer a wide range of access courses, maybe just one in health and social care and that was about it, so then I decided to embark on 3 A-Levels instead. I've loved it though!

I like all the mature colleges but St Edmunds seem right up my street - calm, serene and the library is lovely. Hughes Hall also caught my eye but I know it will be too "noisy" for me hehe! I found Wolfson to be vwry friendly but it is a little far out from the centre of Cambridge.

Have you been to the open day, if so, how did you find it?

I’ve honestly really enjoyed the Access course! 😊 lots of psychology, criminology, sociology, history and a good dose of research methods. It was definitely full-on at times, but the topics were so interesting that it never felt overwhelming. I actually found it through the Access to HE official website when I was hunting for providers, and I’m really glad I went for that route in the end.

Your A-levels sound brilliant and fair play for taking on three! That’s such a big workload, but it’s lovely that you’re enjoying them. It makes such a difference when you actually like what you’re studying.

And yes, the mature colleges all seem to have such different vibes! St Edmund’s looks so calm and tucked away, Hughes Hall feels a bit livelier and more social, and Wolfson came across as incredibly friendly when I joined one of their online sessions.

I didn’t manage to go to the open day in person, sadly, I watched loads of the talks and virtual tours but I imagine being there must be a completely different experience! How did you find it? Did you visit all three colleges?
Also, when you say Hughes Hall is “noisier”, do you mean because it’s a bit larger and busier?

Morning!

I didn't manage to visit in person either, but I'm considering a day trip there at some point. But to be honest with you, after seeing all the videos and photos, I think I will be fine there. There's a virtual tour on their website so you do get that "In-Person" vibe and from there - I knew I wanted to go there.

I hope you get an offer and go for an offer holder day! Hughes Hall is one of the larger colleges and has more of the busy vibe which may suit younger people, but as I'm just that bit older (not retired!) I do want somewhere a little quieter and calming. If i was sucessful then I would be happy to go to Highed Hall if they pooled me there. I have my heart set on St Edmunds though hehe.

I didn't realise you could study access courses online as I always thought you needed to go into college but the topics you studied sound so broad and interesting! It definitely sounds very full - on so your clearly very intelligent to navigate all those topics in one year! 😀

I think the interview offers are gradually coming out now, how are you feeling about it?

I meant Hughes Hall not Hinged Hall! Apologies for that typing error this morning - My sleepy eyes are still in full swing.

Morning! 😊
A day trip sounds like such a lovely plan it’s always nice to get a proper feel for a place in person. But it’s great that the virtual tour already gave you that “this is it” moment with St Edmund’s! Sometimes you can just tell straight away, even through a screen. It really does look so calm and welcoming, so I can completely see why you were drawn to it.
And thank you so much that’s really kind of you to say about the offer! 🥺 To be honest it would be a dream come true! Fingers crossed for both of us! 🤞🤞🤞. Your insight into the mature colleges is so helpful too. I didn’t realise Hughes Hall had such a busy vibe compared to St Edmund’s. It makes perfect sense you'd prefer somewhere quieter and more settled, St Edmund's looks really cozy! And it’s lovely that you’d still be open to Hughes if you were pooled, but I can definitely see why St Edmund’s has your heart already! Hehe 😊 I’ll be crossing my fingers for you to get an offer for St Edmund’s on January then! 🤞🤞🤞

Aww, that’s so kind of you to say thank you, but not at all! I wouldn’t consider myself intelligent, but I guess the intensity of the course did require some resilience and hard work as I’m sure studying three A-levels does as well! So cheers to us for our effort, I guess! 😊 I didn’t realise you couldn’t do Access courses online either until I started looking properly. The online option worked really well for me, and the subjects were genuinely interesting, so it made the year feel very full-on but rewarding at the same time.
And yes, the interview offers! I’m honestly a mix of nervous and excited 🙈 I do have the grades they ask for, but I know how competitive it all is, so you just never really know. At the same time, I can’t help feeling excited at the possibility even just having the chance to meet someone who’s an expert in the subject you love and to actually talk to them about it feels like such a special opportunity, whatever the outcome. I keep telling myself not to expect anything because the stats are tough, but I think I’d probably cry if an interview invitation ever did pop up 😂
I suppose when you’re a bit older you appreciate these moments even more! 🤞✨

Aww...this obviously means a lot to you so I do hope if you have the grades - they will want to know about you. I have a good feeling you will get an interview if you are this passionate 😊

Yes, you are right - stats are tough, but Cambridge have become more open and inclusive to many people. I can imagine it will be an emotional time for you if you recieved an interview. That was one of the reasons I waited until the busy application round was complete, so that I could focus on the quiet round where there is less applications for them to seive through and maybe I could be noticed?! 😂 it will be awe inspiring to meet the experts and hear their views and be taught by them would just be so awesome! I agree with you there 😊

Nevertheless I hope both of us are sucessful, and I personally will not take it to heart if I don't get accepted because Cambridge know what they want and if it's not me then no worries.

I really wish you all the best of luck and take care !

Aww thank you so much 💛 I really appreciate your kindness.

Your strategy for applying in the quieter round makes total sense it’s such a clever approach! And honestly, with how thoughtful and reflective you are, I’m sure you’ll stand out wherever you apply. St Edmund’s sounds like the perfect match for you too, so I really hope January brings you good news 🤞✨

And yes, meeting the experts would be absolutely awe-inspiring! Just the idea of hearing their views, asking questions, and learning from people who’ve shaped the field is amazing in itself regardless of what happens afterwards. It’s such a special opportunity.

I get what you mean and I feel the same. Cambridge knows what they’re looking for, and if it’s meant to be, it will be and if not, then it’s for a reason, and there are plenty of other great unis too

Wishing you all the luck with your application too you absolutely deserve the best! Take care!
