Changing course at university for next academic year

I came to university as a last minute decision when I was accepted onto the foundation psychology course at Manchester metropolitan university. I had no idea what career I wanted to pursue but have always had an interest in psychology and thoughroughly enjoyed studying it at a-level, however I’m not sure it is the right pathway for me. I don’t know what the possibility of me transferring to Bsc Geography for the next academic year would be as I didn’t study it at A-level and didn’t get many ucas points in my A-levels. I think that career wise this course would benefit me more. Can anyone offer any advice? Thank you!

Hi there,

I’d recommend getting in touch with your university’s admissions department, as they’ll be able to give the most accurate advice about transferring courses. Your foundation year will have already provided you with key academic skills such as writing, referencing, and critical thinking, which are valuable across all subjects.

As an example, at LJMU our Geography degree requires a C or above in Geography or a related science or social science subject and since Psychology is classed as a social science, it’s often seen as relevant experience. So your background may be more closely related to Geography than you think!

It’s also worth noting that subject requirements can vary slightly between Geography, Human Geography, and Environmental Geography, so it’s a good idea to check which pathway best fits your background and interests. Geography courses may have different preferred A-level subjects or entry criteria, so exploring your options could help you find the best fit. Consider what kind of career you’d like in the future and review the module lists to see which course aligns most closely with your goals.

Hope this helps,

Megan (LJMU Rep)

Hi @missmads1

It can be possible to changed your linked degree but this is not guaranteed. I would advise you contact our Student Hub to find out if this is possible for your particular circumstances, as it will depend on availability on the course you want to change to, entry requirements etc.

For our BSc (Hons) Geography course you would typically need a Geography A-Level to be eligible so if it is not possible to transfer to Year 1 of that degree, you will be able to discuss other options that may be available to you.

You can contact our Student Hub on 0161 247 1000 or in person on the ground floor of the Business School.

Hope this helps,
Mel 😊
