Funding for part-time second undergraduate degree (ELQ exempt)

Hi,

I am currently hoping to start studying with the Open University, the course is BSc (Hons) Mathematics and its Learning (course code Q46) and I would be studying part-time.

I previously studied full-time at Cardiff University for a total of 5 years (4 year course including year abroad, but I took an Interruption of Study part way through my final year due to ill health and returned the following year to complete my studies). My course was a BA with joint honours in Archaeology and Italian, however due to continued health challenges as well as other difficulties (see N.B.) I was unable to submit my dissertation and thus was awarded a Pass Degree without honours.

I was advised by the Open University website that the course I have now applied to is exempt from previous study/ELQ rules in terms of eligibility for a part-time tuition fee loan. I applied for this yesterday to SFE and my application is currently showing as in-progress, however I was just wondering if anyone would be able to advise me of the likelihood of my application being approved? Just so I know what to expect really in terms of whether to look into any other options.

N.B. I’m not sure whether this is relevant but I do have the potentially extenuating circumstance that since completing my previous university studies I have been diagnosed with a Specific Learning Difficulty as covered by the Equality Act, which due to being undiagnosed at the time I did not receive support for whilst studying at Cardiff and therefore I believe had a significant impact on my ability to fully engage with my course and to complete my studies to my full academic potential. For example, I do believe that with the right support in place I would have been able to complete and submit my dissertation, and thus would have had the potential to graduate with honours instead of just a pass degree. I would have no issue supplying appropriate evidence for this if it was needed.

Apologies for the long post but hopefully that is comprehensive enough.

Many thanks in advance!

Hi Em,

Yes, Mathematics at the Open University is an exception course. So, you'll be entitled to funding regardless of your previous study.

Once your application is approved your account will show this: please check there and your e-mails for any updates.

Thanks, Graeme
