Practice Questions in University

Hi! I am currently studying law at uni and was wondering if anyone knew how I could get feedback on any practice essays I write. I asked my seminar and lecture tutors, and they said they are not able to do so and told me to take advantage of any formative assessments that are there. However, I would like to practice beyond that and would like to get feedback on the essays I write. It would be helpful if anyone knew how I could either get them marked or tackle this issue somehow. Thank you

Hi there,

You’ve already done the right thing by checking with your tutors, but there are still a few ways you can get useful feedback beyond formal assessments. If you have access to a marking rubric or past-paper mark schemes, one option is to either mark your own work against it or ask a friend to do so, it can actually be surprisingly effective if you’re both strict and objective about it.

If you know any students in the years above you, or anyone doing a Master’s or PhD in law, they’re often really well-placed to give informal feedback and point out where your structure, argument or use of authorities could be strengthened. Some universities also have writing centres or academic skills teams that offer general essay-writing support, even if they can’t mark full essays.

Best wishes,

Hi,

As mentioned above, make sure to check whether or not your university has an academic skills or academic support service. You may able to arrange a meeting or attend a drop-in session with them to talk over your essay structure and content. If not, check if your university hosts any essay-writing workshops for students throughout the year.

Once you've completed and received feedback on your formative assessments, it may also be worthwhile asking your tutors/lecturers for a more in-depth follow-up on the feedback during their office hours or outside of class time; I know my lecturers were always more willing to discuss assignments with students once they were graded.

Hope this helps and best of luck with your studies,
Eve (Kingston Rep).

Hi @Anonymous 👋

Hope you are well! That's a great first step 🙂 Make sure you ask your lecturers during office hours after or before class so they can help you possibly as well as talking to the academic support team as well if you have one. Personal tutor/student advisor is the first mode of contact when it comes to anything like this and then your lecturers are perfect to handle feedback process more thoroughly with you. Do you have academic support hours to drop by and see the lecturers? With your work, it is also helpful to see if they have added a marking rubric or criteria so you can see which parts are highlighted for you to work on! Hope this helps a bit more.

Hi there,

As people have said, I would say the best thing to do would be to see if you can make an appointment with an academic advisor at your uni and see if they can have a look through your work and see if they can help you with any improvements. I have always found them to be really helpful so it is worth having a look and see if there is something that you can do with them.

I also think that asking your peers is a good idea too as they will be able to have a look over it and as they are doing the same assignment, they should be able to help you and see what you might be able to add or things that they have added in to their work that you might want to too!

I hope this helps,
