Applying to masters with a 2:2 (59%) average in second year

So in my second year I got a 2:2, which was significantly lower than my first year. My average overall is a low 2:1 (first year counts too here) and I think given I am trying much harder now and I have taken easier modules I can get a high 2:1 this year, but I would not be able to predict myself as such. I did have extenuating circumstances alst year (diagnosed mental illness recently) but would I just be better off just applying immediately after graduating, rather than applying now, especially because the unis I called effectively said they do not count first year (so it is just the 2:2 mark)?

Hi there,

I think what you do highly depends on the entry requirements for the Masters you're looking to apply for. Some postgrad courses accept 2:2 classifications, so in that case you would be fine as long as your personal statement and academic references are good enough!

If the courses you're looking at require a 2:1 minimum, then I would hold off on applying for now. You could wait until your grades for semester 1 have been released and are on your transcript. If you're getting 2:1 or higher grades for semester 1 and those grades are on your transcript, then it might be good enough to apply with, as it shows you're working at a 2:1 level and are likely predicted to graduate with a 2:1.

Alternatively, you could wait until your final grades of the year have been released/end of year results day. With those finalised grades, you won't need to work out what you're predicted as you will know what classification you'll be graduating with. Depending on when your final grades get released, it might not leave you much time to sort accommodation, uni applications and finance applications so I'd bare that in mind when making your decision.

Lastly, before finalising any decisions, I'd have a chat with your personal tutor or dissertation supervisor, as they might be able to give you advice on when in the year would be best to apply, what courses/uni's you might find best etc!

Hope that helps! Good luck for the rest of your final year
