Is it possible to take A Level Maths if I move up to higher from November mocks?

I’m year 11 and about to take November mocks. I was kind of lazy throughout school but I’m currently trying to achieve a grade 5 in my foundation paper for November mocks and move up to the higher paper. I plan to catch up with all higher content and achieve a grade 7 by the end of the year so I can take A Level Maths.

The problem is, the applications are in November, and my last exam grades were not great. Because I was on foundation, I got a grade 4. I’m worried that 6th forms will not accept me for a conditional offer even if I get a grade 7 at the end of the year due to me currently being on foundation maths and my poor previous grades.

Plus my November mocks are foundation paper, and I heard that 6th forms look at your mock results to make their decisions. Can they see if I am on foundation paper and even then would they give me a conditional offer with a grade 5?

Will I be allowed to take A Level Maths if I achieve a grade 7, or is it too late to do so? It’s kind of stressing me out

Hey @dandaman42,

You'll need to talk to your GCSE Maths teacher and possibly notify any of the sixth forms you apply to about your current situation.

If you do achieve a grade 7, there shouldn't be any issue with you taking A-Level Maths in most sixth forms/colleges - lots of students underperform throughout the year and then jump a grade or two near the end due to more frequent revision, so past performance isn't a huge factor. However, you may not get a conditional offer for some sixth forms/colleges as you're currently on a grade 4 and they have no objective way of knowing whether or not that grade will improve significantly.

Your GCSE Maths teacher may be able to predict you a higher grade if they believe you're capable of achieving it, which you could then use to support your case in your sixth form applications. Your first step should be talking to them about your potential options.

Hope this helps and best of luck,
Eve (Kingston Rep).
