TMUA results look scrambled

My son is an A* student with excellent recommendations and 8/9 grades in all Math exams up to now. He sat the TMUA test in October and found it fairly easy except from 1-2 questions at the end of each paper. He was expecting a grade 8-9 with worst case scenario a 7; in all his practice tests he never scored below a 7. Yet today he got a 3.7 (!!) which makes absolutely no sense. Have Pearson Vue scrambled candidates results before? There is no appeal process so it seems we are stuck with this meaningless result.

Hi, Today I got a 3.3, and I felt the same exact thing, I have been predicted A*A*A*A*A in econ maths chem epq and further maths, and I’m applying to ucl and Cambridge econ. It’s because they have made the grade boundaries much higher than before

Exactly the same for my son who got 3.9 not sure what’s going on. He said he did ok especially on second paper! Really baffled!

I have exactly the same problem. My son was expecting a 6.5 - 7 score …. He was very positive when he finished the tests. Today he got 3.3 …. which he has never scored in any practice test, and we cannot understand it (Cambridge is out of the question now). We wondered if it was the score of one paper only and if there has been some kind of a mistake…..

You can indeed ask Pearson Vue to check the scores if you email them via your online UAT account. They say: ‘Pearson VUE will investigate and report the outcome to you by email, typically within 5 working days’…

I will be requesting a re-check of his scores today.

Just wondered if you emailed to request a recheck. We are at the same situation. But my understanding was that they would not recheck.

My son was the same. 3.7 and was scoring 7 on practice papers. He also thought the exam had gone well, especially paper 2.

My son is in the same boat. We are shocked since he has been doing well with past papers etc. And he thought the exam went well.

I am hearing that grade boundaries changed but I cannot fully understand this since the distribution looks the same and there seems to be similar numbers achieving higher scores.

I was checking to see if there were any issues with Pearson VUE regarding the TMUA, as my son's results were similar he was also expecting a better score but received 3.3 . Since many others seem to be in the same situation, we will also request a recheck to see if it makes any difference. He too projected to have A* in all subjects. Thanks for sharing your inputs on this.

Same here. We don’t know what is wrong with UAT? They give us another child’s score or there are bugs when they equate those results?

I think if lots of people write they may realise there is an error..-and review their marking..

Unfortunately UAT UK policies clearly mention "4.6 Appeals in relation to test results will not be accepted by Pearson VUE or UAT-UK."

It is unfortunate but I think we will hit a dead end with UAT-UK.

Is there any way this recheck could be requested throight the system ? My son is currently refusing to look at his account therefore I dont know. But hopefully we will look at it today or tomorrow.

As per this document - No

same here - scored a 3. Feel like only half of the results have been uploaded. Were your accounts breached too ? please keep me posted. Would like to take this further.

I think there is no harm to request for a recheck with the recent lapses such as the results leak, and there seems to be quite a number with shockingly low results. The more requests, the more seriously they will look into the issue. Hopefully they will check seriously as this affects the futures of the students. Please encourage any one with shockingly low results to report the issue.

It's of course possible that a mistake was made, but it's not at all likely. I've certainly never heard of it happening before.

Truth is, tmua isn't a typical exam. It's incredibly difficult to tell how well you did before results day, and regular A-level/GCSE attainment is rarely a reliable indicator. I've known people with 4A* including maths and further maths who got scores between 2 and 4, and similarly I've known people with worse grades who did better on tmua. From personal experience, I'm predicted A* in maths and further maths, was getting 8s and 9s on timed past tmua papers. I felt like the questions were pretty easy overall. On results day, though, I got a 5.8, and my friends who are in a similar situation got a 4.0 and a 6.7. It's just the nature of the test I'm afraid.

Out of curiosity, which unis has your son applied to?

You may already know that on 31st Oct the exam results were leaked, quite a few students noticed that the validation numbers shown to them were different from their actual ones. If the number is incorrect, it is possible that the score released is not actually theirs.
However, when the official results came out on the 14th, it seemed that everyone said their official scores were the same as the leaked ones. Based on this, it appears that the earlier incorrect validation numbers may not have been corrected; otherwise, the results would not have remained exactly the same.

If you still have the previous validation number, you may request that the results be issued in the same format as last year, where the same page shows the candidate’s name, ID, exam date and time, validation number, and the score. This would allow us to verify whether the correct result has been matched to the correct student. The current format, which only shows the score, does not allow for such confirmation.
