The Student Room Group

nathan's y11 gyg - the climb to the nines!

hii everyone! thanks for tuning into my (kind of late) y11 gyg (i'll make it worth your time i promise!)

i'm nathan, an aspiring y11 student hoping to maximise my grades and enjoy my last year of secondary school life (although i'm really looking forward to sixth form!) ☺️

predicted grades (before mock season):
maths - 8
eng lit - 8+
eng lang - 8+
biology - 8-
chemistry - 8+
physics - 7+
history - 8+
spanish - 8-
comp sci - 8
further maths - ?? (haven't done a formal assessment yet)
religious studies (did in y10!) - 8 (169/204 - 3 marks off a grade 9 🥲)

my school doesn't give us grade 9 predictions until after our mocks, so hopefully some of these will be 9's afterwards!

goals for y11:
-survive mock season. (NEXT WEEK!!😖)
-achieve predicted grades of 8/9 for maths and triple science + the rest 7/8/9 to apply for the a-level combo i want to do at a really good sixth form! (maths, further maths, computer science and either physics/eng lit/economics + the compulsory epq)
-finish off my personal statement (with a total of 0 good extracurriculars to talk about...)
-get out of my comfort zone somehow (i'm quite introverted irl 😓)
-revisit my old passions of editing, writing stories and watching k-dramas!

things about me:
-huge lover of anime, reality tv, and mystery series + enjoy analysing character growth and development
-in my free time i like to play a wide variety of videogames, read comics online and catch up on shows i'm watching!
-mbti is intj, ennegram is 6w5, zodiac is gemini
-passionate about many sociological topics (mainly gender roles/identity, race inequality, sexuality), applying my own experience/research to current events + educate other inquisitive ppl like me!
-fav characters are: kuroo, bakugou, bocchi, carmen, kyoko, mydei, silver wolf (the list goes on lol)

thanks again if you read through all of my yap, hopefully you can stick around to see my progress!

daily mood: motivated + positive - ready to lock in for the weekend! 😆

Hey Nathan! Your predicted grades and goals look great For mocks, just focus on small, consistent revision sessions and take breaks to avoid burnout. Your passions and independent interests already make your personal statement stand out, so keep highlighting those. Stay positive you got this!

things to do tmrw:
-complete the practice eng lang paper 1 handout my teacher gave me
-quickly review western front + modern medicine and do a full medicine paper
-do some flashcards on cell transport if i have time

days before mock season: 2 days!! (first mocks are eng lang + history medicine)

Sounds like a solid day, especially getting through a full maths paper and bio revision don’t worry too much about the lost marks, that’s exactly what mocks are for. Your plan for tomorrow looks really organised, and with two days to go you’re in a good position. Keep going, you’ve got this!

thank you!! my fav subject is honestly an even split between maths and eng lit, i love problem solving but also analytical work which is why im so torn between them lol

didn't get everything done i needed to get done today, but some AMAZING progress was made!!

what i did:
-completed the practice eng lang paper 1 handout my teacher gave me - i got my q4 and q5 marked and got 16/20 and 35/40 respectively on them! i'm quite proud of how high i scored!
-didn't review western or modern medicine but i did review some renaissance medicine + sentence starters for each question on the paper (i'm hoping it won't have lots of modern medicine knowledge needed...)

things to do tmrw:
-complete another practice paper on maths paper 1 + combine the revision with some review of domains and ranges for further maths (in preparation for the math non-calc on tues and fm on wed)
-review cell transport for biology + do some more ppqs! (in preparation for biology on wed)

days before mock season: tomorrow. (confident for eng lang, a bit worried for history medicine through time)

daily mood: feeling mostly prepared, hoping that history goes easy on me 😖

17/11/2025 (day 1 of mock season!)
first day of mocks went quite well, i'm quite relieved honestly!

how the mocks today were:
eng lang - i did very well on q1-3, i might have done well on q4/5 but i'm not completely sure. overall, it went quite well!
history - the questions weren't too bad! i wasn't forced to answer a question based on modern medicine, but the western front questions threw me off a bit. this mock also went quite well!

what i think i'll get on the mocks (so far):
eng lang - 8
history - 7+ (not including paper 2 which is next week, not looking forward to it...)

what i did:
-did the maths paper 1 for 2024 and got 68/80, i'm feeling pretty confident for maths now!

things to do tmrw:
-review cell transport for biology + do a past paper on biology paper 1! (in preparation for biology on wed)
-review domain and ranges (in preparation for further maths on wed)

mocks tomorrow: just maths paper 1! i'm very excited for it as its one of my fav subjects and i think i'll score very high!

daily mood: prepared and slightly excited for tomorrow, mock season has started off strong! ☺️

18/11/2025 (day 2 of mock season!)
second day of mocks were quite nice, only had maths paper 1 to do!

how the mocks today were:
maths - i think the paper went very well! after talking to my friends ik i lost 4 marks guaranteed but i'm very confident on the rest of my answers 😆

what i think i'll get on the mocks (so far):
eng lang - 8
history - 7+ (not including paper 2 which is next week, not looking forward to it...)
maths - 8+ (not including paper 2 which is next week)

what i did:
-did the biology paper for 2023 and got 58/100, i'm pretty content with the score, considering i made a lot of silly errors
-did some questions on sketching piecewise functions, domains/ranges and matrix transformations for further maths! i caught a lot of previous mistakes i was making, so hopefully they don't happen in the exam too...

things to do tmrw:
-review systems architecture + memory and storage for comp sci using some cgp flashcards (for the cs mock on thurs)
-chill out for a bit, the rest of the mocks after tomorrow i can do well in with minimal revision (cs + spanish)

mocks tomorrow: biology paper 1 + further maths! (very nervous for both of these, i'm honestly half-winging these two 😭)

daily mood: nervous - slowly realising how little content i covered in depth for biology paper 1 + further maths 😖

for reading/writing i use the cgp vocab book that my teacher gave us and make some flashcards based on the words in there + construct some sentences, but if you don't have the book there's prob some pdf files online that has it all on there! tbh i'm not really sure how to revise for listening, maybe ask ur teacher/friends to read out some sentences and then try to translate them??

19/11/2025 (day 3 of mock season!)
third day of mocks were both amazing and absolutely horrible.

how the mocks today were:
biology - paper was EXTREMELY GOOD, everything that i was terrible at content wise (e.g. cell division) barely came up + the six markers were super easy! super confident on a good biology grade 😄
further maths - on the other hand, further maths was ABSOLUTELY HORRIFIC. all the questions were worded so differently from what we learnt in class. the only relieving bit is that mostly everyone felt the same way about the mock, so we'll all go down together 🥲

what i think i'll get on the mocks (so far):
eng lang - 8 (only did paper 1)
history - 7+ (not including paper 2 which is next week, not looking forward to it...)
maths - 8+ (not including paper 2 which is next week)
biology - 8+ (only did paper 1)
further maths - 6- (only did matrices, binomial expansions, factor theorem, domains and ranges + gcse maths algebra)

what i did:
-did some questions on the fetch decode execute cycle + comparing different types of secondary storage for comp sci
-relaxed for the rest of the day, didn't have much else to worry about 😊

things to do tmrw:
-go over my weak points in spanish through flashcards (in preparation for the spanish listening + reading on friday)
-review properties of alpha, beta and gamma radiation for physics (in preparation for physics paper 1 on monday)

mocks tomorrow: computer science (only on systems architecture + memory and storage, i'm a bit confident for the exam?)

daily mood: a bit uneasy - tomorrow is quite a boring day honestly 🙃

-nathan ❤️
