TMUA for Warwick and Imperial

I recently sat the TMUA and got a mediocre score of 4.7. I’m going to study maths and was wondering if I should bother applying for Imperial as I know they want scores of about ~7. I plan on applying to Warwick as well even though my score falls slightly below 5 as I believe they have accepted it before. My actual grades are better though - I have a predicted of 3 A* and 1 A. Any advice will be appreciated!!

Hey! First off, well done on sitting the TMUA—4.7 is still a solid score, especially since it’s a tricky test.
Regarding Imperial, it’s true that their typical TMUA scores are around 7, so your score is below their average. That said, your predicted grades of 3 A* and 1 A are really strong and can help your application stand out in other ways. It’s definitely worth applying if Imperial is your top choice, but make sure you have strong backups as well.
As for Warwick, they have accepted candidates with TMUA scores slightly below 5 before, so your score shouldn’t automatically rule you out. Again, your excellent predicted grades work in your favor.
If you want to strengthen your applications, focusing on your personal statement and references is key, and practicing some more TMUA-style questions could help if you decide to retake it. don’t be discouraged! Apply where you really want to go, but keep a balanced list so you have options. Good luck!

Omg same score with similar situation

I personally will still be applying to Imperial because I don't really have anywhere else I would apply.

Also I won't be applying for pure Maths so my course isn't as common.

And about if you should still even apply, it depends on what you're looking for in a uni and whether there is anywhere else you'd want to apply. You obviously aren't doing oxbridage so let imperial be your aspirational pick.

Hey, I'm in a similar ish situation- I've applied to study Maths at Imperial. I got a 3.9 in the TMUA, much much lower than expected but I do believe some circumstances on the day restricted my performance. However I have 5 A* predicted (Maths, FM, Physics, Chemistry, EPQ), a strong PS and reference, straight 9s at GCSEs and 4 As at AS Levels. I also do plan on perhaps emailing Imperial about my foreboding exam day circumstances, but if anyone could provide any input on what my chances are or whatever, it would be much appreciated!

Hi guys, It is worth saying that what do you have to lose by applying to imperial, you've got 5 choices and with those grades you have a good chance of getting into Warwick and definitely other uni's that don't need TMUA. So in my opinion by not applying you're wasting a choice on a uni that you wouldn't want to go to anyway. Go for it and good luck! 🙂

For Warwick, the TMUA score is only one part of the application, so it is not always as strict as it might look at first. Some years people with different ranges of scores still received offers, because the department tends to look at the overall profile rather than a single number. Predictions, GCSEs, personal statement and general academic strength all play a part as well.

If Warwick is a place you genuinely like, it is still worth applying. A lot of students enjoy the environment here and say the course becomes manageable once you settle into the support system in first year. One test never completely defines an applicant, and the department knows that results can vary for many reasons
