Oxford PhD/MSc with a 2.2 but a Distinction Masters? (STEM)

Hi all,

I'm looking for anecdotal advice on Oxford PhD/MSc applications in STEM. My situation is a 2.2 from UCL, with a plan to do a Master's and aim for a Distinction.

I know that on paper, Oxford's requirements for most funded PhDs and competitive MSc courses are a strong 2.1 or First, and that a 2.2 is a significant hurdle. I'm fully aware it's an uphill battle and not the standard pathway.

What I'm really hoping to find out is if anyone has*personal experience or knows someone*who has managed to get into an Oxford PhD or Master's programme with a similar profile:

* A 2.2 from a strong Russell Group uni but followed by a*Distinction-level Masters.
* Especially in a STEM field.

Has anyone seen this happen? What made the application successful?

Really appreciate any insight!

Hey! It is possible, but usually only when the Master’s is really strong. I’ve seen people with a 2:2 get into Oxford STEM courses after getting a Distinction and a great research project behind them. Strong references from supervisors, clear research fit, and evidence of real academic improvement are what make the difference. It’s definitely an uphill climb, but not unheard of if your Master’s performance is excellent.

Thank you so much for this! It's really helpful and encouraging to know it's possible with a strong Masters. I'll definitely focus on making my research project and references stand out. Thanks for the reassurance!

Focusing on a strong Master’s project and good references is the right approach. Keep highlighting your research and academic strengths you’ve got this!
