Do the university of Manchester care about Gcse grades much?

Hello, I am in year 12 and I've got grade 7s and 6s in my gcses, However in English language I got a grade 5.
Im worried they will reject my application due to my grade 5, when a grade 6 is required for the engineering course I want to do.
I am willing to try my hardest towards my alevels and achieve the best grades possible.
But I'm afraid my grade 5 might bring me down.
Should I resit English language in year 13?

If they have a grade requirement then it’s probably worth a resit. I think the November resits have passed so you’d prob have to resit in May/June if you wanna go to Manchester.
I personally also achieved a 5 at first, but I got my mark reviewed and it went up to a 6 (unfortunately the deadline has passed so I can’t recommend you do that if you’re close to a 6)

Specific GCSE requirements are not flexible - applying without the right GCSE grades is one of the quickest ways to get an immediate rejection.

Ask you school about resitting this GCSE alongside your A levels. You would then just add this as another 'pending qualification' to your UCAS application, and any offer would include this as an extra condition.

However - and this is important - Engineering is maths-heavy, and if you struggle with maths or simply don't enjoy it, then this may not be the best degree option for you. Look at more practical entry routes like an apprenticeship - Guide to Engineering Apprenticeships | Higherin - or Engineering | Royal Navy

Hi,

As mentioned above, if a specific GCSE grade is listed in the entry requirements, it’s more than likely that your application would not be accepted with a grade 5. Because of this, it would be worth considering resitting English Language to meet the requirement.

It’s great that you’re motivated to work hard on your A-levels, but meeting all the stated entry requirements is usually essential. Resitting could give you the best chance of securing a place on your chosen course at your preferred university.

Hope this helps,

ahh yeah, I was thinking that too - and I think I wasn't too far off a 6 either, but I didn't really bother as I answered 2 questions incorrectly on the paper, but I think I am eligible for the "widening participation" programme which requires me to have a 4 in English language instead of a 6 😅.

Thank you very much for your response. I have realised that I may be eligible for the Widening participations programme over there, which requires me to have a 4 in English instead of a 6.

I don’t even have any gcse/igcse since I’m international and skipped a year. I passed my ielts and have a good predicted for maths in a level. You’ll be fine as they tend to look at ALEVEL grades more than gcses.
