Picking between Uni of Exeter and Uni of Southampton

I am looking to do Psychology at either Uni of Exeter or Uni of Southampton. Both are very far away so distance from home doesn’t really matter. I want to compare between level of education, work experience and student life. If any students at these Uni’s could tell me what’s good about them (especially if you study Psychology) or just what’s good about student life/nightlife in general to help me pick. Thank you!
If your goal is to become a professional psychologist I've heard the applied psychology (clinical) MSci at Exeter is a really good as a basis for pursuing that as it includes a clinical placement within the course which enables you to get key clinical experience early (which is very competitive to get otherwise).

Therefore if that's your goal and that's the course you have an offer for, Exeter may be your best bet academically/professionally.

That said in my experiences of both (studying in a different subject area) I personally found student support at Exeter was not great and did not have a good experience there myself.

Hi Anonymous,
I went to Exeter so maybe can give you a bit of an insight as to what student life is like. I loved studying and living in Exeter, I didn't study psychology but knew lots of people who did as it was a very popular course and Exeter is a well-regarded provider as a Russel group University. From my own experience of studying in the humanities department Exeter was always very responsive and professors are always happy to chat and offer support.

In terms of what the university and city life is like Exeter Uni has over 300 societies and more than 100 sports clubs so there is so much to get involved in. If you have a hobby already then there is probably a club for it and there's loads of new sports/societies to try if you want to try something new. Exeter itself is a lovely sized city with everything you could need in terms of shopping and cafes and night life. There is a busy city centre with lots of restaurant and shops and around 3-5 very popular nightclubs and lots of pubs. The University has a pub and nightclub on Streatham campus which is great in 1st year. The city, and pretty much everything in Exeter, is within walking distance of Uni accommodation so most people just walk everywhere which is helpful when budgeting. You can also jump on the train and in 15 mins you can be up on the moors in beautiful countryside or down at Exmouth on the beach in the summer.

Good luck,
Amelie (University of Exeter Student Ambassador)

Hello there,

I am not a university student, but I do live in Exeter so can give you a bit of an insight there.

Exeter in general is very nice, the shopping is decent and there are a lot of things to do there considering it's size. It is not a huge city, so there isn't all of the crazy noise and mild insanity of larger places. Exeter is also very safe.

In terms of night life, I'm not much of a partier so have little first hand experience. However, I have seen a lot of uni students walking the streets while dressed up at night and doing whatever it is that they do.

I hope this helps.

Hi Anonymous
I'm currently at Southampton University but don't study psychology, so although I can't speak much on its programs, I can give you a general feel of what Soton is like.

The city is lively, with lots to do during the day and evening/night, whether that's clubbing or going bowling.

We have over 200 societies, including lots of casual and competitive sports opportunities - great for relaxing in between study.

There is a strong sense of community within the students union and the different university departments.

Our student ambassador scheme also has a big community and is a great way to earn money on the side.

The uni offers an amazing support system for a wide range of concerns including money, mental health, safety and disability support.

Both lecturers and students are so friendly!

In psychology there are opportunities for postgraduate students to become assistants, helping the lecturers in seminars, there is also observation and VR labs and options to study abroad.

Hope this helped, and if you have any specific questions about the city or university life, let me know and I will try my best to answer.
