Media at Birmingham, Oxford Brookes, or Warwick

I have looked at Digital Media and Communications (Uni of Birmingham), Media Journalism and Publishing (Oxford Brookes), Media and Creative Industries (Uni of Warwick). I really like all of these courses, but am not sure which one I should attend next year, so if anyone knows of any of these courses, applied, or studied them, I would really appreciate any insight you have. Also, if any of you know of any other media courses (outside of London) that would be good to apply to, I would be grateful to know of them. Thank you!

Go to any remaining Open Days if available - listen to the subject presentations, and look around at the Uni environment. Ask about what sort of careers their graduates have gone on to. Where are you going to feel happiest for 3 or 4 years?

Which courses have a placement, work-experience, or study-abroad - these will add enormously to your graduate CV. Do not obsess about RG etc - it means nothing for practical, employment focussed courses like Media.

What are the entry requirements - both A level etc and any specific GCSE requirements - for each course. The usual advice for your 5 UCAS choices as to have one choice just above your predicted grades (risky but you might still get an offer), three at your predicted grades (your most likely offers), and one well below your predicted grades (your potential Insurance choice).

Media and Creative Industries at Warwick has a really good reputation and the environment is very supportive. A lot of people like the mix of academic thinking with real world topics, and the campus is quite active for anything related to creative work and student media. The facilities and societies make it easy to try different projects, so many students feel they get a lot out of it.

I cannot say what is perfect for you because everyone prefers something different, but many students who choose Warwick are happy with the course and the overall atmosphere. If you like a place where you can explore media in a broader way and still have strong academic structure, Warwick can be a very good option.

You could also look at the module list and maybe talk to someone in the department to see if the style fits what you want. Sometimes that makes the decision clearer

I haven't had experience with any of the courses at these unis, although I have friends at all three who enjoy them for different reasons, but in terms of other media courses outside of London, Falmouth offers Media Production BA (Hons), which is a great, hands-on course with lots of fun modules, including creating pieces for journalism, advertising and film/TV. I would say to definitely head to some open days to see which university fits your vibe the best, and to find out which course might be suited to you - eg. some may be more theoretical or practical than others, so it depends what you're looking for!

Thank you all so much! I really appreciate your responses. So far, is know I'm applying to all three, and am considering Bournemouth and Salford as my potential two other options for media. Thank you all again - your advice has been invaluable

Hey there, if you’re looking at media courses, I’d say LSBU is definitely worth keeping on your list, especially because we’re right in London. If you’re into anything creative like media production, journalism or content creation, being in the city honestly makes a big difference. You’re surrounded by studios, agencies and production companies, and loads of students pick up little projects, part time roles or networking opportunities just from being here.

The media courses at LSBU are very hands on. You won’t just be sitting in lectures, you’ll actually be filming, editing, working in the studios and building a proper portfolio from early on. A lot of the teaching comes from people who’ve worked in the industry, so you get advice that feels real and up to date. We’ve also got industry accreditations, which basically means the course is shaped around what employers expect, not just theory on paper.

If you want something practical, creative and based in a city where media is happening all around you, LSBU fits that vibe really well.

You’re always welcome to explore LSBU further. You can book a campus tour https://www.lsbu.ac.uk/study/study-at-lsbu/open-days/campus-tours to get a proper feel for our spaces, and you can chat with our current students on Unibuddy https://www.lsbu.ac.uk/student-life/chat to get an insight into the courses you’re curious about.

Hey @Windinthewillows ,

Amazing to hear you're looking at media options for university and might be considering us! Media is one of our big focuses as a university - the majority of our media-based arts programmes are taught at our MediaCity campus here in Salford, which is where the BBC and ITV are based (alongside lots of other media production companies), so you're right in the heart of industry. All of our media courses are taught on state of the art equipment too (which you can also use for personal portfolio projects), so you're learning at the standard of industry right from the get go. I'd definitely consider facilities and course content as big factors when considering Media degrees - you want to make sure where you go can give you lots of opportunities to build your skills and connect with other creatives. Do you have a particular pathway in Media in mind with us? More than happy to have a chat about courses either way! 😊

I'd always recommend visiting the places you're applying to if you haven't already - you might find it helps cement your decision for a particular place, or shows you an option you didn't realise you'd love quite as much! We've got one more Open Day this year on the Saturday 13th December if you haven't visited us yet (you can book on here - we have a travel bursary too!), and you might find your other options have events coming up soon too 😊

Good luck with your choices, fingers crossed all your applications go well!
All the best,
Becky

Hiya!

It's great that you're interested in Media. Have you looked at Liverpool Hope at all? We offer an amazing course called Film, TV, Radio and Media Production. This course is taught on our Creative Campus, which is a specialist creative and performing arts site. You'll get the opportunity to both theory and practical throughout all three years, and you'll be using industry standard software. Plus, we have direct links with Toxteth TV, a local multi-use creative media and training venue, so you'll work with professionals from outside of Hope as well.

Alternatively, we have a course called Film & Visual Culture which focuses on just the film/photography side of the other course (including both theory and practical). This has to be combined with another subject. There are a large range, but based on what you've mentioned there you may be interested in Media and Communications or Digital Marketing, both of which are held at our Hope Park campus (don't worry, there's a free shuttle bus between campuses for our combined honours students!).

I loved studying Film at Hope, and would always recommend it to anyone. Best of luck with whatever you decide to do!

Hi @Windinthewillows,

My name is Q and I studied Media Production here at Bournemouth University (BU). I now study Marketing Management as a Masters, and learnt transferable skills that have helped me with social media and marketing.
It's great to hear you are trying to explore your options and if you're interested in a variety of different areas of media, BU is worth a look.

The Media Production course looks at areas such as filmmaking, audio, animation and photography, and gives you the opportunity to practice all these skills across a range of different projects for social media campaigns, live events, exhibitions and more. You'll get the opportunity to specialise more in your second year and look more specifically into areas such as writing, design and production roles such as directing and producing. We also have a lovely building for doing work in and a kit desk where you can book out equipment for academic and personal use, so it's really great if you want to do continued development outside of your course.
I'm linking the course page here if you are interested in having a look: Media Production - course page
We also have a few Open Days coming up so I am linking those here too. We have virtual ones where you can chat online and look at a virtual tour, or physical ones where you can come and look at the campus yourself. You can find out more about our Open Days here.

Media at BU doesn't stop at the courses, we also have a student led media network called Nerve Media, with opportunities in TV (film and video), Radio, Photography, Online (magazines and articles) and Sports, where you can learn new skills and gain experience, so it is great to get involved in. Additionally, sometimes we get opportunities through the course to assist in festivals and other events, so lots of ways to gain experiences.

I hope this helps - let me know if you have any further questions.
