cambridge peterhouse engineering, imperial aero application

hi,

I got 6 5.5 4 on the ESAT (M2,M1,phys respectively). Is there any chance for cambridge engineering (peterhouse) and imperial aero? Ive got 4A* in maths,FM,phys, compsci as well as a pretty stacked PS and a decent reference (priv school, non contextual btw).

For imperial, do they care very much about PS and predicted grades in comparison to the ESAT?

For peterhouse, does their STEP requirement mean that I am more likely to receive an offer? (because it's an additional requirement to filter out students)

Also anyone who got in or applied to cambridge and imperial aero tell me your ESAT scores (especially if you are/were in a similar situation to me)

Hey, first off your predicted grades and GCSEs look really strong, so that’s a big positive. For Imperial, ESAT carries significant weight for engineering/aero, but a strong personal statement and reference can help balance a lower score. They mostly use it to flag candidates for interviews.
For Cambridge Peterhouse, the STEP requirement mainly filters maths-heavy applicants, but for engineering they’ll also consider your ESAT. A lower ESAT in Maths might hurt slightly, but your predicted grades, PS, and reference still make you a viable candidate.
In terms of actual experience, most people I’ve seen with similar ESAT scores do still get interviews if the rest of their application is strong, though offers are less guaranteed. Focus on making your interview as strong as possible to compensate.

About the STEP offer, peterhouse do require a grade 2 in STEP II as part of their conditional offer for engineering, does this mean that they will use this to filter out students or do they just make offer holders take it simply because it is prepares offer holders for the engineering degree?

Also if I do get an interview, because of my low ESAT physics score, will they only give me an offer if I manage to have a perfect interview, or is there some leeway with regards to the interview?

Peterhouse asking for STEP II is mostly about preparation rather than filtering before interview. They don’t usually reject people at the application stage because of STEP, since the exam happens after offers are made. They mainly look at your grades, school performance, ESAT, and interview potential when deciding who gets invited.
If you get an interview, you don’t need a perfect one to receive an offer. A lower ESAT physics score won’t automatically block you, and they know different applicants have strengths in different areas. As long as you show good problem-solving, mathematical thinking, and the ability to improve with guidance, there is definitely leeway. Cambridge look at the whole picture, not one test score.

ok thanks a lot

does being a privately educated student disadvantage me a lot (since they will assume i will have had more support)?

Being privately educated doesn’t disadvantage you automatically, but Cambridge do look at your school background as part of contextual data. It doesn’t harm your chances, it just means they might expect slightly higher performance compared to someone from a significantly underperforming school.
If your grades, ESAT, and interview performance are strong enough for the standard Cambridge engineering applicant pool, you’ll still be considered on the same footing. Plenty of private-school applicants get interviews and offers every year, so it won’t block you.

Oh cool, have you heard anything from them yet?

No not yet, I’ve heard they do it late. Hopefully the rest of my application makes up for my poor score
