English at a London University

Hi,
I would like to do English at university for 2026 entry, and I was wondering if anyone had any uni recommendations?

I’m aiming to stay in London, and so far am applying to St Mary’s, University of West London, and King’s College. I know this may seem like a strange mix, but my GCSE grades aren’t fantastic due to mitigating circumstances at the time so I wouldn’t like to get my hopes up too high.

Obviously, I need to apply for two more universities, has anybody got any suggestions?

Thanks for reading!!

Hey, that’s a good start with St Mary’s, UWL, and King’s. For two more universities in or around London for English, you could consider Goldsmiths, which typically asks for CCC, Queen Mary University of London with ABB, or Birkbeck, which has a flexible schedule and foundation year option. These could be good realistic choices if your GCSEs were not strong.

Okay, great thank you! I was going to apply for UCL, but they are quite strict on GCSE’s, for example they want a 6 in English Lang at GCSE’s and I got a 4 in Lang and 5 in Lit, despite being predicted two 8’s. It’s just a little annoying because I can’t apply for all the uni’s I’d like to

Yeah, that’s frustrating, but a lot of the top London unis are strict on GCSEs, especially English. Predicted grades help, but they often still use GCSEs as a minimum filter. Focusing on Goldsmiths, Queen Mary, and Birkbeck sounds like a smart move they’re realistic and still well respected. You could also consider applying to one more uni outside London as a backup if you really want more options.
