What can I do?

I’ve recently started an MsC conversion psychology course, and already I find myself in a pickle. I also have an art undergraduate degree, acquired knowledge of business, finance and management, I have certificates in manufacturing and counselling, and personal experience with SEND in children and adults. What do I do with all this? Where do I go from here? How can I use all this effectively? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi there!

I would try and figure our career fields which really motivate you or you have a passion for, after that i would also take into consideration the different jobs within that area and their salary if that is important to you as well as factors like career progression, personal development, what will you give to this job and what will it give back? If you struggle with this i would also try find a careers advisor through my a careers company or just have a look on google. I think it's also very clear that you undoubtedly have a range of skills through having so many academic achievements and possibly work experience or placements to go along side this!

I think you're in a very good position to explore career opportunities and have a lot of clear success in past ventures which no doubt will look amazing on your CV!

Keep going you got this!

Hello!

Oh wow what a wide range! It sounds like you have a really varied skillset and experience which could be useful in a number of different areas. I'd say it really depends on what you personally want to do, what drives you and will keep you engaged and passionate about pursuing a career in that area. The first question might be what drove you to start the MSc Psychology Conversion course? What appealed to you about this subject area and what could you see yourself doing in future?

Next you might want to think about what areas of psychology you are most interested in. If you have just started your course then you can use this time to explore the different core areas and see what connects with you the most. I'm going to link a page here for 'Career options in psychology' from the British Psychological Society website. I recommend having a good read of everything on here to get some insight on the typical career paths through the psychology field with lots of handy links to career guides, career maps and more resources. Depending on whether you want to continue with further education towards doctorate level may influence what you'd like to do too as with your MSc conversion you could continue down this route and with further professional training become a psychologist in the various branches.

With your experience there's lots of different directions you may wish to take things, which is great with a psychology degree as it is so varied! The skills and knowledge it gives you are valued by lots of employers with different amounts of further study or previous work experience needed for different paths. Art, business, finance, management, manufacturing (could be related to marketing?), counselling and experience with those with SEND are all relevant within the field and could be useful in their relevant job areas. I'd recommend looking at the Prospects website to explore what options are out there and the 'What can I do with my degree?' page is particularly useful.

Think about what really excites you to think about doing and go from there. If you have a careers department at your course provider then checking in with them to discuss what your next options are and get some advice on work experience you could look into could be good too.
