Best Edinburgh uni student accommodation

Hi! I'm going to be an undergraduate studying at Edinburgh uni next year and I can't pick which accommodation to apply for !!

I was initially looking at catered but have heard private school and international students often go there, so would be harder to make friends (I'm from a state school and international students are generally only around for a year)- has anyone got any thoughts on this??

Has anyone got any tips on which accom are the best socially and location wise, because I've heard that's also a factor (I'm studying politics and languages so closer to George Square would be ideal)

Are you applying to Pollock halls? I lived there first year, Ewing house. Then I lived in a lovely flat on Buccleuch Place.

Edit: I see Buccleuch Place is on the Edinburgh accomodation website as I just searched for it. Its right next to the library near George Square and right near the meadows. I'd highly recommend it if you can get it.

Hi!! Thanks for the reply, I will defo look into Buccleuch place. After reading about the consensus on how bad the food is and high concentration of private school students in pollock, I've decided to go self catered but would like to hear your thoughts on pollock- still not entirely decided??

I didn't have a great time at Pollock, lots of private school students and some bullying, immature people etc. It's more institutional. Oh yeah and the food is unhealthy! Or it was when I was there, quite a while back! So yeah I think you are wise to go self catered and look elsewhere. I had a much better time at Buccleuch place but then I had my own flat second year. I'm not sure whether you'd be applying for a flatshare or solitary flat?

Btw Edinburgh is a great city, you probably know that, it's a great choice. There's an interesting blend of nationalities like quite a few Northern Irish, Irish, Aussies, North Americans etc next to the Scots, in the city and the uni. Unfortunately the private school posh English are the worst people there in my experience. Actually the English(not all of them, mind) more generally qualified as the worst people, unpatriotic of me that but I found it to be true. Still you just have to get in a situation where you have some good friends and meet the right people, sure this is possible.

There is likely to be a higher concentration of private school students and international students in more expensive accommodation. This simply reflects what they and state school pupils can afford.

There is also a fair amount of inverse snobbery. But most students, private and state, get along well.
