English literature at uni

Hi,

I'm a Sixth Former looking at uni choices for English lit and so do any students have any advice about the application process or any experience/insights into these as ideas:
- Edinburgh
- Sheffield
- Bristol
- York
- Durham

A few others I have as suggestions are:
- Reading
- Southampton
- Royal Holloway
- Liverpool

In particular I'm looking at: the course, teaching, location, nightlife, societies and of course libraries

Have you thought about Uni of Birmingham? I did an English lit degree there (Graduated this July) and loved it! It fulfils all of your criteria, Uni is great and in a good area, teaching is spot on with lots of support, nightlife is amazing being a big city and the library is one of the biggest in the country and many societies, I mostly joined the Drama/Musical theatre ones. When I started there I was a little concerned with Birmingham's reputation but I am 100% sure I made the right decision. I loved it so much I'm now doing a Masters here!

Okay that sounds really really interesting! What A-Levels or equivalent did you do and what did you get?

Hi,

I am a current BA English third year student at the University of Southampton and I have been loving the course so far. My favourite thing about the course is the close knit connection that you create with your teaching tutors in regards to how they are always ready to support your worries. The consultation meetings that we have are very purposeful and a great way to continuously progress. The course allows you to choose from a wide variety of modules that you believe is most suited for you. And as an English student of course you need access to the multiple books available at the Hartley Library.

In terms of location, I would say Southampton is a city with a lot of greenery, the campuses are covered in trees and small ponds and we have the common where people usually do picnics in the summer.

I hope your application process goes well and if you have any more specific questions please feel free to ask away.

Best Wishes,
Mahra (Student Ambassador)

Hiya!

I am currently a final year student at the University of Sheffield and while I am not a English Lit student, I can help answer your other points as life as a student. In terms of location, we are a city university so our buildings are interspersed around. However, this is not to say that there are huge distances from one building to another with most situated around 5-20 minute walk from each other. It is a very student city so there are always plenty of students walking to and from accommodations too. The main student accom is Ranmoor and Endcliffe which is around a 25-30 minute walk from the SU and there is also city accom which is a 10 minute walk away but holds less students than the main student village. One of my favourite things about it being a city campus is that there are parks in between different buildings like Western Park and Crookes Valley Park which makes it a nice walk and also you can take a break and picnic in the summer time.

In terms of nightlife, there are events ran by societies like bar crawls which lead to club nights in the Foundry which is the SU's club venue. Our SU has ranked No.1 in the country for the last 7 years running and there are over 350 clubs and societies from cheese society to taylor swift society. You can see a list of all the societies offered here: Societies.

For our libraries we have a few: the IC, Western Bank Library and the Diamond. The IC is 24/7 and has a mix of silent study and general study areas. Western Bank is mostly silent study and looks out onto Western Park which makes it a great place to study with a nice view. The Diamond is my personal favourite and has lots of different study spaces too.

To find out information about your course specifically, you can have a look at the course requirements website where they go through details of the modules and the range of optional choices you have to: English Literature - University of Sheffield.

Hope this helps and do let me know if you have anymore questions about Sheffield

Hi Dollsunified, 👋

It's so great to hear you are interested in English at Sheffield.

Just to follow on from Jivanthika's points, the libraries are amazing at Sheffield and their archives are so interesting. Sheffield has great special collections, including small press poetry collections which you can book appointments to view and handle.

For me, I definitely found it easy to settle into Sheffield. It's such a friendly and welcoming city that I decided I didn't want to move and I did my MA and now my PhD all at Sheffield.

It was also easy to settle into the English course because everyone was so easy to talk to and module structures were explained straight away so I could see how the first year would go.

Please let me know if you have any further questions about the course or Sheffield more specifically and I'd be more than happy to help. Alternatively, you can send me or another English student ambassador a message here, you just need to filter by course.

All best wishes,
Phoebe 😃
