Law degree

Hi,
My son has offers for Law at Reading, Northumbria, Aston Birmingham and Sheffield Hallam so far.
I appreciate these are not up there with the really reputable RG unis .....but can anyone advise on which his best 2 options would be out of those?
Many thanks

That’s a solid set of offers, and you're right to think carefully about which two to pick. There’s no one size fits all answer, but I can walk you through strengths and trade offs for each If you would like of course!

He will be invited to some sort of offer-holder visit day at each Uni - these usually happen in the Spring Term - and these are a great opportunity to have a more critical look around, ask more detailed questions about the course, and talk with current students about what they like about being at that Uni.

He doesnt need to make a decision about Firm/Insurance until May, and there is no advantage with making an earlier decision, it makes no difference to how any of the Unis will view him or his application. Much of the decision needs to based on the offer grades, and what he thinks he will actually achieve in August, and again its safer to wait until at least Easter to weigh-up all of the options.

Hi. Thank you so much for your reply. Yes absolutely would appreciate any advice that can help him in his choice. My real concern is you read so much about how these non RG universities are not respected by law firms making it a bigger uphill battle thinking about employability. Maybe I'm overthinking it as his mum🫣

Thank you! That's actually really great advice as the offers have come much earlier than we expected so there is a feeling of urgency in making a decision. So thank you that's helpful👍

Out of the four, Reading usually has the strongest academic reputation for Law, with good teaching quality and decent links to London firms. It’s the most traditionally academic choice and can look slightly stronger to some employers.
Northumbria is also a very good option, especially for the practical side of Law. Their MLaw/Exempting route and strong connections with regional firms mean graduates often do very well in terms of employability. It’s well regarded in the profession for producing work ready trainees.
Aston and Sheffield Hallam both have their positives, but for pure Law, Reading and Northumbria tend to come out on top overall. If he’s narrowing down to two, those are usually the best balanced choices in terms of reputation, structure, and long-term opportunities.

Hi.

I'm Sid, currently studying LLB Law w/ international business at the University of Reading.

Reading is a respected institution, and the Law programme attracts many strong applicants each year so it’s great that your son has got an offer!

Our main LLB Law degree you'll find a lot of flexibility and support. You can tailor your studies with optional modules in areas like commercial law.

The Careers Team and Law School regularly host events, insight days, and employer talks to help you explore different legal paths. - we have connections with key law firms in regards to offering your son opportunities to apply for internship schemes which are vital in securing a training contract etc.

There's a clear focus on helping you prepare for your future, whether that's becoming a solicitor, barrister, or working in a related field.

Outside of academics, Reading offers a vibrant social scene. There are over 100 student societies, including the Law Society, which organises mooting competitions, socials, networking events and more. Plus, the university hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including club nights and career fairs, so there's always something
going on.

If you or your son have any more questions about the course, or student life at Reading, feel free to reply to this message, l'd be happy to help!

Kind Regards,
