Fine Art Portfolio

I'm wanting to apply to fine art at uni next year and need a portfolio of about 15-20pages along with my application. It's due in January at most of my chosen universities, does anyone who's done a fine art portfolio or have knowledge on it know if they think it's possible to create one in this time frame of 2 months. I have done art through high school (i'm currently doing advanced higher art) and have work at a good quality too show for it, but it wouldn't equate to much in the folio.

Hey! Yeah, I think it’s definitely possible to make a 15–20 page portfolio in 2 months, especially since you’re doing Advanced Higher Art. You probably already have some strong work you can include, and universities like to see your process as much as finished pieces, so sketches, experiments, and idea development count too.Try to plan your time so you’re creating new work most weeks, and leave the last week or so to put it together neatly. Quality is better than just filling pages.
It’s tight but doable if you stay organised!

Are you able to create it online? you could put your previous pieces together and either print to the pages or submit it as an online document if you're allowed. Try to include important info like annotations if you need to reach the 15-20 page mark.

hi yeah I can it's supposed to be submitted as a PDF of 15/20 pages. I'll definitely include annotations now thanks !
Hi there, I put together a post recently with advice for all kinds of portfolio building. https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7597072

It's possible to put it together a portfolio in a short time-frame, i'd probably just rely more on your existing work and try and spend some time focused on presentation

hi @anipatty you definitely can put a portfolio together in 2 months, Ive done one in less than a week before but I really don't recommend that 😅.

A single piece of work / image can be one page of your portfolio and universities like to see your development work too, like progress pictures and sketch book designs so don't worry too much about filling the 20 pages. Little experiments or tests you've done is also a good thing to through in there.

hop this helps

Hey @anipatty!

I studied BA Fine Art and Art History at Kingston University and had to make a 15-20 page portfolio for my application as well.

It's definitely possible to create a portfolio within two months: remember you don't have to create lots of new work, but rather just tie-up any loose ends on old projects and document your current creative practice (whether that be in school or at home). Take lots of photos and make sure to experiment with different digital lay-outs and page orders.

I've included a link (here) to a blog post I made a few months back about creating my own portfolio - hopefully it'll give you some additional insights into the process.

If you have any questions about what it's like to study Fine Art at university, feel free to let me know and I'll respond as soon as possible. 🙃

Best of luck,
Eve (Kingston Rep).
