When would it be easiest to change my name in uni?

I've always wanted to change my name due to it being really uncommon and odd. I don't like all the questions I get about it so I decided I'm going to change it once I can move away from my family who are against name changes. I'm wondering if it would be easier to change it in my first year or second year at uni for student finance. Does anyone know if there's a best time to change it? And will my new name be on my degree?
Hi, I've moved your thread to the uni life forum  The ask SFE forum is for questions about SFE/SLC products (i.e. different types of student loans) for official SFE representatives to answer!

In terms of whether your new name would be on your degree, that's probably a question for your uni. I'd check with your personal tutor to start with - they probably may not know the answer but should be able to help you find out who would if they don't!

As for when to change it, I'm not sure it really makes a difference other than probably easier to do it over the summer before you reapply for finance rather than in the middle of the academic year.

Hi @nysa07. The advice I would give you is that can change your name. To have it on your degree, update early, ideally before your degree is conferred. Degree certificate typically uses your legal name on your student records at conferral. If you update before graduation, the new name should be on the system, otherwise you may need a replacement later (possibly with fees). Make sure to let Student Finance know about the name change as soon as it’s legally changed and provide the required documents .I hope this helped!

Hey,

This is a sensible thing to think about ahead of time, and it’s good that you’re planning it rather than doing it last-minute.

If you’re going to change your name during university, it’s almost always easier to do it earlier rather than later. Most people aim to make the change between academic years. For example, during the summer before you re-register for the next year. That timing tends to cause the least admin hassle because:

You can update your details with the university before the new year starts.
Student Finance will process the change in time for your next payment.
It avoids situations where your name is different midway through modules, assessments, or official documents.
It minimises any confusion when taking exams or submitting work, since you’ll start the year fully registered under your new name.

Unis and Student Finance both accept name changes. And yes, your degree certificate will be issued with your new legal name, as long as the change was officially processed before graduation.

It’s also worth speaking to student services or your personal tutor for guidance. At the University of Salford, we have AskUS, which helps students with exactly these admin-type questions, and most universities have something similar (sometimes called Student Hub, Student Support Centre, Registry, etc.). They can tell you about the exact process for your uni and the best timing based on their internal deadlines.

You’re definitely not alone in this, and universities handle it more often than you’d think.

Good luck 😊
